News Update

Community Calendar Report for Tuesday, July 29th, 2025

IPR News reports today that the man accused of stabbing 11 people at the Traverse City Walmart was formally charged yesterday in a T-C court. 42-year-old Bradford James Gille pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of assault with intent to murder and one count of terrorism. A judge called it one of the most heinous cases to come before the court in decades. Munson Hospital says most victims are recovering, but one remains in serious condition. The victims included island musician Ruby John’s mom. I-P-R says Gille disrupted his arraignment with outbursts about drugs and toxins before bond was set at $100,000. He was already being sought by Emmet County deputies before Saturday’s attack.

Environmental groups gathered this past weekend to mark 15 years since Enbridge’s massive oil spill into the Kalamazoo River. They say the disaster—one of the worst inland spills in U.S. history—should serve as a warning about the aging Line 5 pipeline under the Great Lakes. Speakers called on state officials to reject Enbridge’s tunnel proposal and shut Line 5 down.

Also last Saturday 266 folks from 28 states did something a few folks think about when they drive across the Mackinac Bridge: they swam the 4.5-mile route, crossing the Straits of Mackinac for charity. All finished safely—raising $100,000 for local fire departments in Mackinaw City and St. Ignace.

And, speaking of folks coming to Michigan, more than 7,500 troops from 36 states and nine countries will arrive next week to take part in Northern Strike 25-2, a major military exercise in Michigan from August 2 to 16. Training will include homeland defense, drone threats, and maritime operations. The exercise is expected to bring $38 million to Michigan’s economy through military pay, travel, and local spending.

NAME OF DAY: The BIC Center Name of the Day is Lisa.  If that’s your name, come on into the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: John Gillespie, Barry McDonough and Olga Burton are on our list today. Happy Birthday to Olga, Barry and John and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But it is very busy in town when the ferry arrives, and the warm weather means lots of folks at the public beach plus hikers and bikers everywhere. Plus, baby turtles are busy crossing. So, let’s be careful out there.

On this date in 1909, Newly formed General Motors acquires Cadillac for $4.5 million. Cadillac was just seven years old, born from the collapse of Henry Ford’s second failed car company. When Ford walked away, investors brought in machinist Henry Leland, who convinced them to keep the factory running. Under Leland’s leadership, Cadillac quickly gained fame for its engineering and luxury, producing nearly 2,500 cars in its first year. After joining GM, Cadillac introduced the world’s first successful electric self-starter in 1912 and became the first automaker to make a V8 engine standard across all models in 1915—technologies that helped shape the modern car industry.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is quibble (verb) [KWIB-ul], which is to argue or complain about small, unimportant things. Quibble can also mean “to evade the point of an argument by making trivial or frivolous objections.” There’s not much to quibble about when it comes to the origins of the verb quibble: it followed the noun quibble, meaning “an evasion of or shift from the point” and “a minor objection or criticism,” into the language in the mid-17th century. That word is likely a diminutive of a now-obsolete noun quib, also referring to an evasion of or shift from the point. Quib, in turn, likely comes from a form of Latin qui [kwee], meaning “who,” that is also a distant relation of our word who.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday

Here’s a thought for the day from Cadilac founder Henry Leland: “There always was and there always will be conflict between Good and Good Enough, and in opening up a new business or a new department one can count upon meeting resistance to a high standard of workmanship. It is easy to get cooperation for mediocre work, but one must sweat blood for a chance to produce a superior product.”

On a lighter note…

How do you get your Cadillac to the 2nd level of a mall?

You use the Escalader.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Tuesday, July 29th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
