A stabbing attack at Traverse City’s Walmart has left 11 people injured — including the mother of Beaver Island musician Ruby John. Police say a 42-year-old man drove 90 miles from Afton, near Indian River, and used a folding knife to randomly stab shoppers Saturday afternoon. Bystanders, including an armed citizen, helped stop him before deputies arrived. Gille, who may have once lived in the area, is charged with 11 counts of attempted murder and one count of terrorism. Four victims remain in serious condition as investigators search for a motive. If you had losses from the March ice storm, the SBA will open a new help site July 31 at the East Jordan Police Department. One-on-one help will be available for disaster loan applications. Call the East Jordan Chamber at 231-536-7351 to schedule an appointment. Other SBA locations are open in Cheboygan and Harbor Springs through August 8. Learn more at sba.gov/disaster. There’s a new way to recycle on Beaver Island—after hours! The Transfer Station now has a blue bin outside the main building for single-stream recycling. You can drop off paper, glass, plastics, and cans anytime, even when the station’s closed. The green bag garbage bin remains available after hoyrs as well. A new AED is now available at the Port Saint James Pavilion on Donegal Bay, thanks to fundraising by Island Treasures Resale Shop. The shop supports many local causes, including expanding access to life-saving defibrillators. Organizers thank volunteers Donna Stambaugh, Karen Wojan, and all who donate to the shop. Special thanks also go to Johnny B and Rob Turner for handling the installation. New AED at the Donegal Bay Pavillion. TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But it is very busy in town when the ferry arrives, and the warm weather means lots of folks at the public beach plus hikers and bikers everywhere. Plus, baby turtles are busy crossing. So, let’s be careful out there. |

On this date in 1967, five days of race rioting end in Detroit. 43 people have died and 467 have been injured after series of skirmishes between Detroit police, the National Guard, the U.S. Army, and the African Americans. It was one of the deadliest and most destructive riots in United States history and left scars on Michigan’s largest city that remain to this day. Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is brouhaha (noun) BROO-hah-hah], a synonym of both uproar and hubbub that refers to great excitement or concern about something. The English language borrowed brouhaha directly from French in the late 19th century, but its origins beyond that are uncertain—not the subject of a noisy brouhaha but perhaps a little modest debate. What’s less arguable is that brouhaha is fun to say, as are many of its synonyms, including hubbub, williwaw, hullabaloo, bobbery, and kerfuffle. Many of these, like brouhaha, tend to suggest a certain judgment that the reason for all the foofaraw is a bit silly, or at least not worth getting all worked up about. A dad joke, for example, might cause a brouhaha, even though it’s really no reason for an uproar to brew. |

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from Jackie Kennedy Onasis who was born on this day in 1929: “We should all do something to right the wrongs that we see and not just complain about them.” |
|
On a lighter note… Did you hear about the barista that ran the comedy club? Every night was a real brouhaha! |
