First some news…

(wild sound from boring machine up and under…)

The sounds of a lateral boring machine are ringing in the air as work presses along on the fiber project for the library, school, health center and other key Island locations. It’s being used to install conduit, essentially a tube that fiber will eventually be pulled through. The conduit for the library’s drop was installed yesterday. Fiber laying on the ground has been providing service to the school, and with a short microwave link, the BIC Center since late fall in 2023. The fiber being stalled this year will also bring service—some of it using short local microwave hops– to both the municipal docks, both township halls, the Print Shop and Marine Museums, the C-M-U campus and boat house and the Governmental Center. The system will distribute service brought from the mainland using microwave links to the L-P and U-P for now, but stratin gin 2027 by under lake fiber as soon as P-FG-N completes that project. The supplies in the field along King’s highway just south of town will be used as the installation moves down King’s highway to the East side tower and the C-M-U campus. It is a field of dreams.

Islanders gathered for a Community Forum on Wave Energy at the BIC Center yesterday afternoon. Scientists researching options for collecting energy from the power of waves in the lake explained the technology and then sought input on various technology demonstration sites on the island.

(:16) These applications for wave energy empowering what we call the new blue economy and these are some of the things that innovators are working on applying wave energy technologies to around the world.

Some possible uses on the Island were suggested including running the bubblers at the municipal docks, power to light the beacon in the old Fresnel lens at the Saint James Township hall, powering the fog house on the south end.  These would just be small scale tests.  Attendees had the opportunity to comment on all of the ideas and suggest others.  There’s another session today at 5:00 at the BIC Center.

On the mainland, the North Lake Correctional Facility is now open as Michigan’s newest ICE detention center — but I-P-R News Radio reports that exactly how many people are inside remains unclear. That’s because ICE reports only average daily populations starting from last October. Analysts say the numbers suggest fewer than 38 detainees so far, even as local advocates push for more transparency and oversight.

There’s no charge for admission, but you do need to reserve a seat at tickets dot bic center dot org. And, for a meal after, remember that Monday evening is all you can eat pizza night at the Beachcomber.

NAME OF DAY: The BIC Center Name of the Day is Marie.  If that’s your name, come on into the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: Marie LaFreniere is on our list today. Happy Birthday to Marie and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But there are lots of folks arriving for the Museum Week and the Music Festival. It is very busy in town when the ferry arrives, and the warm weather means lots of folks at the public beach plus hikers and bikers everywhere. Plus, baby turtles are busy crossing. So, let’s be careful out there.

On this day in 1799 a large slab inscribed with three different languages, including hieroglyphics and Ancient Greek, is discovered by a soldier in Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. Once part of a monument from 196 B-C-E, the Rosetta Stone will be the modern world’s key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. Also on this date in 1929, Michigan Wilbur M. Brucker rules that Livingston County does not have the authority to prohibit women in suits from riding in cars. The Livingston Stone explaining why women in suits in cars was a problem has yet to be found.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is tantalize (verb) [TAN-tuh-lyze] means to cause someone to feel interest or excitement about something that is very attractive or appealing. Today’s word has a tantalizing source: poor King Tantalus of Lydia. The mythic monarch offended the ancient Greek gods, and was sentenced, according to Homer’s Odyssey, to stand neck-deep in water, beneath overhanging boughs of a tree heavily laden with ripe, juicy fruit. But though he was always hungry and thirsty, Tantalus could neither drink the water nor eat the fruit: anytime he moved to get them, they would retreat from his reach. Our word tantalize is taken from the name of the eternally tormented king.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday

Here’s a thought for the day from Alan Turing, who working with a team, cracked the German Enigma machine that was first used by the German Army on this date in 1928: “We can only see a short distance ahead, but we can see plenty there that needs to be done.”

On a lighter note…

Have you heard about the time they had to evacuate the music festival when a band did a cover of Boogie Wonderland.  It set off the Earth, Wind & Fire alarm.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Monday, July 14th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.

🚜 Fiber conduit is going in across Beaver Island, bringing high-speed service to schools, libraries, museums and more — it’s a real field of dreams. 🌊 Islanders also got to weigh in on small-scale wave energy projects at a community forum.

🏢 Meanwhile, Michigan’s newest ICE detention center near Baldwin is open, but how many are inside remains murky.

🎆 And over in Charlevoix, the Venetian Festival kicks off Saturday so be prepared for traffic if you go across — the better plan is to stay Island-side and enjoy the Beaver Island Music Festival, which starts Thursday. A complete look the festival along with other Island and local news is coming up after a Global and national news update from F-S-N.
