Peaine Township is clarifying the public’s right to access what’s known as “Mike Boyle’s Beach” on Beaver Island. Township Supervisor Maria Dal Pra says there’s a 68-foot-wide county-owned easement from East Side Drive to the water, intended for residents and visitors alike. However, the area hasn’t been formally surveyed and currently appears closer to 30 feet. A survey is planned in coming months to mark the exact boundaries. Meanwhile, any barriers blocking public use will be removed by Monday. Property owners can mark their own land, but not within the public easement. So now if you hike from Southarm to Eastside Drive you can loop back to the Blue Trail.

The Lake Guardian is based in Milwaukee. Passengers from the Lake Guardian arrive on the Island to study lake research procedures. Photo from St. James Township In other news, Callie Barr is making another run for Congress in Michigan’s First District, hoping to unseat Republican Jack Bergman after losing by over 100,000 votes last year. At her launch, Barr called herself the “clear underdog.” Bergman’s team says her campaign will again only strengthen support for the incumbent. The Michigan Supreme Court won’t hear Jennifer Crumbley’s bid for release as she appeals her manslaughter convictions tied to the Oxford school shooting. That means she’ll stay in prison while the case moves forward. Also in Lansing, a bill introduced in the House aims to bring cursive back to schools. It would encourage districts to teach kids to read and write cursive by 2027, helping them connect to history. The plan has strong bipartisan support. Back on the Island, the Queen is still in hiding at the Elks lodge. Kevin McDonough won the Saturday night draw, but picked the five of clubs. The pot is now $15,800. Meantime, the Wildlife club wants you to know that you cannot hide (or store) your boat at Barney’s Lake. Several boats have been left there in the past few weeks. While the Little Traverse Bay Conservancy once allowed boat storage on their property there, it is now prohibited.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But there are lots of folks arriving for the Museum Week and the Music Festival. It is very busy in town when the ferry arrives, and the warm weather means lots of folks at the public beach plus hikers and bikers everywhere. Plus, baby turtles are busy crossing. So, let’s be careful out there. |

On this day in 1789 upwards of 1,000 Parisian revolutionaries storm a medieval fortress and prison to acquire its large stores of gunpowder. The Bastille falls after four hours, and the battle becomes the flashpoint for the French revolution. July 14th comes to be celebrated as the Fête de la Fédération or Bastille Day. |
|
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is nuance (noun) [NOO-ahnss] which s a very small difference in something, such as color, tone, meaning, or some other characteristic. The history of nuance starts in Latin with the noun nūbēs [New base], meaning “cloud.” Nūbēs floated into Middle French as nu, which eventually gave rise to nuer [new-A], meaning “to make shades of color.” Nuer in turn produced nuance [nu-ANCE], which in Middle French meant “shade of color.” English borrowed nuance from French, with the meaning “a subtle distinction or variation,” in the late 18th century. That meaning persists today, but the word has also picked up a few nuances of its own. For example, nuance is sometimes used in a specific musical sense, designating a subtle, expressive variation in a musical performance that is not indicated in the score. |

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from Charles Dickens writing about the period of the French Revolution: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” |
|
On a lighter note… Have you heard about the time they had to evacuate the music festival when a band did a cover of Boogie Wonderland. It set off the Earth, Wind & Fire alarm. |
