The Great Lakes Island Summit wrapped up yesterday just before 11:00 after two full days of meetings and events on the Island. Angel Welke, who lead the team organizing the event was enthused with the results. “We saw lots of great ideas to help resolve Island issues,” she said in some wrap up comments. The Alliance is made up of representatives from almost all the inhabited islands in the Great Lakes.

Beaver Island has its first ADA-compliant fishing pier. Thanks to a Charlevoix County Community Foundation grant, the Beaver Island Wildlife Club installed the new pier on Lake Geneserath. It’s designed for everyone to enjoy—whether fishing, launching a boat, or simply taking in the view. Wildlife Club director Don Tritsch says every time he visits, someone is using it. He thanked C3F donors and local contractor Island Property Services for making the project possible.

Over in Petoskey, the new 60-unit affordable housing project called the Lofts at Lumber Square drew more than 240 names on its waiting list before opening. Advocates say Emmet County alone needs hundreds more rentals to meet demand. Meantime, here on the Island, there is some progress. A new 12-unit affordable housing project called the Juniper opens in October, and already nine units are spoken for. Leaders across the region say more efforts like these are vital to keeping communities livable.

A new Michigan State study finds shoreline armoring along Lake Michigan has jumped fivefold since 2014. Nearly 70 miles, or 19 percent, of the state’s western shore is now lined with seawalls and revetments. Researchers warn that while armoring offers short-term protection for property owners, it disrupts natural beach-building and can worsen erosion. There’s more about the study and the implications of added shoreline armoring in a Bridge Michigan article linked in our script online.

The Grand Traverse County Health Department says a bat found in a local home has tested positive for rabies. All people potentially exposed are now receiving post-exposure treatment. Rabies is spread through bites or scratches and is almost always fatal without prompt care, though U.S. deaths are rare thanks to vaccination. Health department officials urge residents to avoid contact with wild animals—especially bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes—and to keep pets vaccinated. They say this is the 33rd rabid bat confirmed in Michigan this year.

Meanwhile, Old Mission Peninsula residents face more fallout from losing a lawsuit filed by local wineries. M-Live reports this morning that a second insurer has sued Peninsula Township, arguing it shouldn’t have to cover nearly $50 million in damages awarded in the litigation. The payout stems from a federal judge’s ruling that township zoning rules violated the wineries’ rights. One insurer has already filed a similar case. Both sides to the original litigation have appealed, so everything including insurance coverage is now up in the air.

Now, here’s a look at events happening on your Emerald Isle…

On this date in 1789, two years after adopting the U.S. Constitution, Congress approves 12 amendments to safeguard individual liberties—protecting freedom of speech, the press, assembly, and religion. Ten of those would be ratified by the states, becoming the Bill of Rights.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is anomaly (noun) [uh-NAH-muh-lee]. It’s a noun for something unusual or unexpected. The word traces back to the Greek anmalos [ah-NOH-mah-los], meaning “uneven” or “irregular.” That comes from the prefix a- [ah], meaning “not,” and homalόs [ho-mah-LOHS], meaning “even,” which in turn comes from homos [HOH-mos], meaning “same.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday

Here’s a thought for the day from John Adams, who was Vice President of the U-S and President of the Senate when the resolution adopting what would become the Bill of Rights was passed by Congress: “We have no Constitution which functions in the absence of a moral people.”

On a lighter note…heere’s a Euchre joke for you to tell tonight at the games…

Why did the right bower cross the road?

To get to the other hand… and probably take the trick!

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Thursday, September 25th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
