Community Calendar Report for Thursday, October 16th, 2025

The Courier reports that Charlevoix has passed a new ordinance banning the feeding of wild animals within city limits. Residents can still use elevated feeders for birds and squirrels, but feeding deer, raccoons, or other wildlife is now prohibited. City Manager Mark Heydlauff told the Courrier that the rule aims to prevent nuisance animals, not punish good intentions. First offenses carry a $100 fine, and police say enforcement will focus on education rather than penalties.

In Lansing, Michigan’s marijuana industry is urging lawmakers to cap new business licenses and crack down on unregulated synthetic products. A package of bills in Lansing would freeze new large grower and retail licenses starting in 2026 and limit dispensaries to one per 10,000 residents. Supporters say the move will stabilize a saturated market and protect existing businesses as a new 24-percent wholesale tax takes effect. Critics warn it could stifle competition and create regional monopolies. Lawmakers plan more hearings before any vote.

Federal funding that keeps air service running at rural airports like Pellston, Alpena, and Sault Ste. Marie is set to expire in early November because of the government shutdown. Transportation officials say flights will continue for now, with airlines operating on the promise of later repayment. But a prolonged shutdown could force cutbacks, threatening vital air links for Northern Michigan communities that rely on tourism and regional connections. Traverse City and Charlevoix are not dependent on essential air service funding.

Speaking of T-C, police there have deployed two solar-powered camera trailers at Open Space and Hull Park, responding to complaints about homeless individuals and other ordinance issues. Officials say the cameras are meant to deter crime and improve safety, not to monitor or identify people.

M-Live forecasters say a strong fall storm is set to bring the first widespread rain in months to Northern Michigan … and the Island. Forecasters say two systems—one from the west and another from the southwest—will merge over Michigan Saturday night into Sunday, dropping one to two inches of rain across the region. Heaviest totals are expected from the Straits to the eastern U-P, with lighter rain to the south. No severe storms are expected, but it’ll be a soaking end to the weekend.

BIRTHDAYS: Erin Meyers is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Erin and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But, let’s be careful out there—especially in the school zone.

On this date in 1918, Spanish influenza grips the state and a bid to lift a quarantine on the Michigan Agricultural College campus (now M-S-U) is overruled by the state health board. Facemasks are passed out to students at U of M, a concert by Caruso is cancelled there and the annual rivalry game between U of M and M-A-C is cancelled. Also on this date in 1946, eighteen-year old Detroit Red Wing rookie, Gordie Howe scores a goal in his first appearance at Olympia Stadium. Howe played for 32 seasons in the National Hockey League and in the World Hockey League.

The Olympia’s marquee in 1962.It hosted hockey, basketball, equestrian contests, conventions, the Beatles, Elton John and more. The Red Wings left at the end of 1979. It was torn down in 1986. Image from historicdetroit.org.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is biannual (adjective) [bye-AN-yuh-wul], an adjective used to describe something that happens twice a year, or something that happens every two years. So, how do you know which is meant? Sometimes by context, but sometimes you can’t. To avoid confusion, some people say semiannual for twice a year and reserve biannual for every two years. Still, usage varies. If you want to be clear, use biennial—that one always means once every two years.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday

Here’s a thought for the day from Red Wings great Gordie Howe: “You can always get someone to do your thinking for you.”

On a lighter note…

Why do hockey rinks have curved corners?

Because if they were 90 degrees, the ice would melt.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Thursday, October 16th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
