News Update

Community Calendar Report for Thursday, March 20th, 2025

First, some news…

The storm that blew through last night had power knocked out to almosy 700 locations on the island at one point and has school closed for the day. Busy G-L-E crews have all power restored on the Island, but G-L-E still has more than 8,000 locations without power on the mainland.

Down in Lansing, Michigan’s House passed a bipartisan plan to fix roads without raising taxes. Our state rep Parker Fairbairn was a co-sponsor of the measure, which reallocates $3.1 billion annually—$2.5 billion for local roads—by using Corporate Income Tax funds and restructuring fuel taxes. It also creates a Neighborhood Roads Fund to help rural communities. Fairbairn says the plan finally addresses Michigan’s long-overdue infrastructure needs. The legislation now

heads to the Senate for further debate.

The Little Traverse Bay Humane Society in Harbor Springs is asking for community support after taking in over 50 animals in just a few days. The shelter received 26 dogs from local rescues and over 30 cats from a colony in Cheboygan County. Many pets are now up for adoption, and donations are needed to cover medical care and supplies. The shelter is also hosting a “Pawt O’ Gold” adoption event through March, offering discounts on select animals. Visit ltbhs.org to donate or learn more.

BIRTHDAYS: Larry Kubic is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Larry, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center! [And, here’s a way to send special birthday wishes to someone on the island:  The B-I-C-S National Honor Society will put up a sign in their yard in exchange for a donation of $10 or more to the Build a Cure for Cancer fund. Contact N-H-S president Alyssa Martin for more details. You can reach her through the front desk at school.]

TRAFFIC: None. But the roads are pocked up and sloppy from the freeze and thaw, plus there’s a new bump from a sinklhole repair on Barney’s Lake road by the Nackerman farm. So, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

On this day in 1897 Sebastian Spering Kresge and associates opened the first Kresge dime store in Detroit, carrying over 1500 items costing a dime or less.  Kresge Store #1 would go on to become one of the top three such stores in the country, making Kresge very wealthy. The company was renamed the Kmart Corporation in 1977, and eventually merged with Sears as both K-Mart and Sears struggled to deal with the move to online sales.  The newly named Sears Holdings Corporation struggled went on to close all of itd Kmart stores and most of its Sears stores. As of December 2024, there were just eight Sears stores remaining down from a one-time high of 3,500.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is

vernal (adjective) [VER-nul], an adjective that describes something that relates to or occurs in the spring. While the sun has been crossing the equator since time immemorial (and as it did earlier today), producing a vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere in late March and in the southern hemisphere in late September, the word vernal has only been in use in English since the early 16th century, when it blossomed from the Latin adjective vernālis. That word in turn traces back to the noun vēr, meaning “spring.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday

Here’s a thought for the day from dime-store founder Sebastian Kresge: “I never made a dime talking.”

On a lighter note…

If I had a dime for every girl who found me unattractive..

Eventually they would find me attractive.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, March 20th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
