Community Calendar Report for Friday, March 21st, 2025

The shipping season on the Great Lakes is officially underway with the opening of the Soo Locks this morning. Grabbing the title of “first ship” is the Clyde S. Vanenkevort/Erie Trader—an articulated tug and barge combo. It dropped anchor Thursday, ready to be first through the Poe Lock. The locks move 80 million tons of cargo each year, making them one of the busiest in the world.

Also up in the Soo Early Thursday morning, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a Rottweiler mix named Cujo, stranded on ice in the St. Mary’s River in Sault Ste. Marie. Crews responded around 3 a.m., navigating icy waters to reach the shivering dog. Cujo was safely reunited with his family. They  thanked the Coast Guard’s quick response.

Down in T-C, planning commissioners are moving closer to adopting stricter rules on short-term rentals. They reviewed a new draft Tuesday that would significantly reduce S-T-Rs in several zoning districts. In some areas, limits would drop from 100% to as low as zero. Officials say the goal is to protect long-term housing and reduce turnover in residential neighborhoods. A public hearing is set for April 15, and commissioners could vote that night to send the plan to the city commission for final approval.

On the Island, the B-I-C-S robotics team is preparing for their final district event next weekend.  B-I-robot will be compete at Ferris State University in Big Rapids March 27th to the 29th. TRAFFIC: None. But the roads are pocked up and sloppy from the freeze and thaw, plus there’s a new bump from a sinkhole repair on Barney’s Lake road by the Nackerman farm. So, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

On this day in 1933 painter Diego Rivera’s murals are unveiled at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The murals celebrate the American worker, particularly those on the production lines of car plants. Zoltan Sepeshy’s mural “Hauling in the Fish” at the Beaver Island Historical Society is painted in a similar style.

On December 8, 2011 Google honored Rivera’s 125th birthday with a Google Doodle.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is

permeate (verb) [PER-mee-ayt], a verb that means to pass or spread through something. Permeate was borrowed into English in the 17th century from Latin permeatus [pair-mee-ah-toos], which comes from the prefix per- [pair] (“through”) and the verb meare[mee-air-ay], meaning “to go” or “to pass.” Meare hasn’t exactly permeated English. Aside from permeate itself, its other English descendants include the relatively common permeable as well as the medical meatus [mee-A-tus] (“a natural body passage”) and the downright rare irremeable (“offering no possibility of return”).

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday

Here’s a thought for the day Diego Rivera: “To be an artist, one must . . . never shirk from the truth as he understands it, never withdraw from life.”

On a lighter note…

Did you hear about the artist that was baroque?

He stole the Monet, to buy Degas, to make the Van Gogh…

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Friday, March 21st, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
