First, some news…
The first ferry trips are scheduled for next week, but the harbor still has a fair bit of ice. I heard buzz yesterday that the Coast Guard ice breakers are busy further North and  We’ll just have to wait and see how things develop. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Michigan Governor Whitmer’s argument that the state is immune from a lawsuit filed by Enbridge over the Line 5 pipeline. Lower courts ruled the state is not immune under the 11th Amendment, allowing the case to proceed.
One year after a devastating ice storm in northern Michigan, recovery efforts are ongoing. While roads and campsites are mostly reopened, the DNR is still addressing debris, assessing tree risks, and mitigating wildfire risks due to increased fuel from damaged trees. The DNR is also prioritizing reforestation efforts and seeking additional funding for enhanced fire suppression.
NASA’s Artemis II mission, the first crewed lunar flyby in over 50 years, launched successfully from Kennedy Space Center yesterday. The mission, carrying astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, will test life support systems and pave the way for future lunar and Mars missions. The spacecraft, named “Integrity,” will orbit the Moon before returning to Earth.
