About 65 people turned out for the Island No Kings March. They left from the Public Beach and headed down main street to the Post office before heading back, with many folks carrying signs. Just before the march, there was an event celebrating Ed Wojan’s donation of land for additional park space for St. James with about 25 people there including Ed’s kids and grandchildren. Michigan EV owners will soon pay more to register their cars. A new state road-funding law adds $100 to annual electric vehicle fees — an 83% hike — bringing the total to $260 before standard registration costs. That makes Michigan tied for the highest EV taxes in the nation. Critics say the move discourages clean car adoption and sends the wrong message to automakers. Marquette’s Fresh Coast Film Festival is expanding to Traverse City. The outdoor-themed film and adventure fest will run April 30 to May 3, 2026, at venues including the City Opera House, Alluvion, and Silver Spruce Brewing. Co-founder Bugsy Sailor says he’s excited to bring the Great Lakes-focused storytelling to a new audience. At the Elks Lodge Saturday evening, the Dam Beavers drew ticket number 44 and found the 8 of diamonds — so the Queen is still hiding! The Dam Beavers took home a $100 consolation prize, and the pot now stands at $41,915. The Queen still hides. Photo from Elks post on the Beaver Island Forum |

On this date in 1902, the first Cadillac automobile rolls out of a Detroit factory—though some records say it may have happened a few days earlier. Cadillac rose from the ashes of the failed Henry Ford Company, after Ford’s split with his investors. Engineer Henry Leland convinced them to keep building cars using his reliable one-cylinder engine. The new company was named for Detroit’s founder, French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac (ahn-TWAHN duh lah MOHT kah-dee-YAK). 1902 Cadilac Model A in the Toyota Automobile Museum. Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is etymology (noun) [eh-tuh-MAH-luh-jee]. An etymology is an explanation of a word’s history—that is, where the word came from and how it developed. The etymology of etymology itself is relatively straightforward. from the Greek etymon (EH-tih-mon), meaning “true sense of a word,” from etymos (EH-tih-mos), meaning “true.” Don’t mix it up with entomon (EN-toh-mon), meaning “insect”—that’s where entomology comes from, the study of bugs. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from baseball great Mickey Mantle: “A team is where a boy can prove his courage on his own. A gang is where a coward goes to hide.” |
On a lighter note… What kind of witch likes to go to the beach? A sandwich. |
