Down in T-C, a dispute over Tax Increment Financing or TIF is getting more complicated. TIFs are used there to finance things like the Downtown Development authority. This spring petitioners raised enough signatures to get a proposal to require that all TIFs be approved in a general election rather than just bey the city council.  But now, the attorney general and governor say the proposal is not consistent with state law. Still, because the proposal is petition-initiated, it will remain on the ballot.  It isn’t clear what will happen if it passes.

Rain from the tropical storm that was once Hurricane Beryl is headed to Michigan, but the bulk of the impact will be downstate. There could be up to six inches of rain in some locations in the southwest corner of the state near Kalamazoo leading to localized flooding, say forecasters. The impact on the island will be limited if any at all.

Pam Grassmick and Beth Leuck [Like] made a trip over to High Island to pick up biologist Martha Vandervort.  Vandervort was there for about a week doing to protect the Piping Plover nesting grounds on the spit there.

Marth Vandervort (:43)
I was documenting how many boats came into the harbor. Did they actually come ashore? How many people were in the parties and what did those folks do? So it’s a little bit of a funny situation where one observes and watches people’s behavior if. People passed the signs. That said please don’t go beyond this. I would get up and and go talk to them and explain to them that there was an endangered species nesting out on the island. And and to please not disturb them, it’s a critical time for the plovers because some of the chicks are quite young. And actually we still have the female that’s sitting on an egg. And this is a really vulnerable time for them.

Vandervort said most visitors were either aware of the need to protect the spit or cooperated with staying away.  She encountered some folks who come each year make sure other visitors are aware of the restrictions.  Thanks to Pam Grassmick who took a recorder along to interview Martha. We’ll have her full interview this evening on Beaver Island Perspectives.  Listen for that after our news at 5.

BIRTHDAYS: Connie Boyle, Kim Mitchell, Brad Coffel, Jr., and Ellen Newman are all celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Ellen, Kim, Connie and Brad, and if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC: It’s busy in town, especially when the ferry comes in and busy by the public beach. No delays inbound or outbound to the airports.  Island beltway running smoothly.  No bridge delays. Lots of bikers and hikers, though, so let’s be careful out there.

On this day in 1913 aptly named Death Valley sizzles with record-smashing high as the temperature on this date in 1913 tops out at 134° F, the highest ever recorded on Earth, and a record that will stand more than a century later. Also on this date in 1925 renowned lawyer Clarence Darrow defends John Scopes for the crime of teaching the theory of evolution in a highly publicized and contentious court case that’s quickly branded ‘the Monkey Trial.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is ungainly (adjective) [un-GAYN-lee], which usually describes someone or something moving in an awkward or clumsy way, or the awkward, clumsy movements themselves. It can also describe an object that is difficult to handle (especially because of being large or heavy), or someone or something that has an awkward appearance. What do you have to gain by knowing the root of ungainly? Plenty. The gain in ungainly is an obsolete English adjective meaning “direct” that ultimately comes from the Old Norse preposition gegn [geNg], meaning “against.” (It is unrelated to the noun in “economic gains” or the verb in “gain an advantage”; those came to English by way of Anglo-French.) Ungainly can describe someone who is clumsy, as in “a tall, ungainly man”; or something that causes you to feel clumsy when you try to handle it, as in “a car with ungainly controls”; or something that simply looks awkward and out of place, as in “an ungainly strip mall.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday

Here’s a thought for the day from renowned Scopes Monkey trial lawyer Calrence Darrow: “When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President. I’m beginning to believe it.”

On a lighter note: How can you tell if a monkey is Canadian? He only climbs maple trees.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, July 10th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
