Despite growing doubts among some Michigan Democrats President Joe Biden remains resolute in his reelection bid. Wayne County Executive Warren Evans questioned Biden’s candidacy following a Detroit press conference, raising concerns about campaign effectiveness. Biden, gearing up for a critical visit to Michigan, aims to shore up support after a lackluster debate performance and to quell worries within his party. While no state Democratic congressional members have called for his withdrawal, support remains mixed. Representative Elissa Slotkin pledged support for Democrats without directly endorsing Biden. With tensions rising, Biden faces the challenge of reuniting fractured support ahead of the fall election.
A 40-year-old man lost his life in a motorcycle crash over the weekend. The accident, which also involved two other vehicles, occurred on Saturday evening in Elmira. Michigan State Police responded to the scene in Boyne Valley Township after reports of the collision on Thumb Lake Road near Springbrook Road. Earlier, police had observed the motorcycle traveling at high speed, prompting an attempted traffic stop, though the vehicle fled. Approximately 25 minutes later, the same motorcycle was involved in the fatal crash. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
As we settle into summer, it’s easy to get complacent about activities that are becoming familiar. Michigan News Connection’s Chrystal Blair has some tips from experts on how to stay safe through the summer.

Summertime in Michigan can be fun. However, warmer temperatures pose health risks that are unique to the season, as people spend more time outdoors. Medical experts highlight that recognizing the signs of overheating early is critical. Symptoms include headaches, nausea and dizziness. Dr. Donna O’Shea with United Healthcare says certain people are at an even greater risk of suffering from heat-related illnesses, including children.
Other tips, wear helmets on bikes, life jackets on boats, stay hydrated, drinking about 4 ounces of water every 15 minutes. Also, wear sun-protective clothing and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen at least every two hours — and immediately after swimming, toweling off or sweating.
Dr. Wendy Sadoff is a dermatologist with Corewell Health in Farmington Hills. She encourages people to get a little more finesse using sunscreen.
O’Shea emphasized that increased temperatures lead to increased E-R visits for heat-related illnesses — meaning longer wait times. As an option, she says insurance providers such as United Healthcare also offer virtual doctor visits around the clock, from anywhere, with no extra costs.
Health professionals in Michigan warn never to leave children or pets alone in a car, even with windows open. Temperatures can quickly reach dangerous levels inside the vehicle.

On this day in 1995 Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead play their last concert featuring all the band’s core members at Chicago’s Soldier Field. After delighting Deadheads for decades, they cap a touring career that logged more than 2,300 concerts. Garcia, their lead guitarist and unofficial spokesman, will die exactly a month later.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is respite (noun) [RESS-pi], which refers to a short period of time when someone is able to stop doing something that is difficult or unpleasant, or when something difficult or unpleasant stops or is delayed. Everyone needs a little R & R from time to time. That’s where respite comes in handy: this word was first used in the 14th century to refer to a delay or extension asked for or granted for a specific reason, such as to give someone time to deliberate on a proposal. This kind of respite offered an opportunity for the kind of consideration inherent in this word’s etymology: respite traces from the Latin term respectus (also the source of English’s respect), which comes from respicere, a verb with both concrete and abstract meanings: “to turn around to look at” or “to regard.” Within a few decades of its earliest known use, English speakers had granted respite the sense we use most often today—”a welcome break.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…
|
||||||
Here’s a thought for the day from Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia: “You ain’t gonna learn what you don’t want to know.”
On a lighter note: How many dead heads does it take to change a light bulb? Eight. One to change it, three others to tape the event, and four to sell homemade tie-dye clothing, pottery, and drugs out in the parking lot.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, July 9th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
