Community Calendar for Wednesday, February 26th, 2020

From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Wednesday, February 26th, 2020.
First some news…
Your Beaver Island Community School and teacher volunteer Connie Boyle fielded a team at the annual TITAN business challenge on Tuesday down in Grand Rapids. They did well. In a field of 40 teams, BICS teams took 6th (Zander, Jessica, Mackenzie) and 8th (Eli, Quintan, Jared).
Within their respective pools they were in the top 2 positions most of the day. In the end, the top 10 teams were all fairly close to each other in total points in a very challenging and fast-paced Business Competition!
Students also went on a Davenport University tour and mini career fair.
Congratulations to Zander, Jessica, Mackenzie, Eli, Quintan and Jared – and their coach Connie Boyle – on another outstanding performance by a B-I-C-S team.
Now here’s what’s happening on your island…

At 7, it’s a western-type thriller set in the Australian outback that has won plenty of awards and gotten rave reviews. It’s The Nightingale. Rated R. Concession stand will be open for snacks, a meal or both—for both shows. Trailers for the movies are on the BIC Center website at BIC Center dot org.

TRAFFIC: None. Critter count was zero this morning, but with the big thaw over the weekend and the freeze last night, the unpaved roads are a crunchy, icy mess, so, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.
BIRTHDAYS: Today, Mike Sowa, Veronica Bigelow and Carolyn Space are celebrating. Happy Birthday to each of theam and, if we missed you on the list today, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center.
ON THIS DAY in 1993, a Bomb explodes at World Trade Center. A group of terrorists detonate a truck bomb, causing an immense explosion in the underground parking garage located below the North Tower of New York City’s World Trade Center. The blast is intended to bring down both the North and South Towers of the trade center complex. It won’t succeed, but will kill six and wound more than 1,000.
WORD OF THE DAY: injunction (noun) [in-JUNK-shun] which means: the act or an instance of enjoining : order, admonition; also, a court order requiring a party to do or refrain from doing a specified act. Injunction derives, via Anglo-French and Late Latin, from the Latin verb injungere, which in turn is based on jungere, meaning “to join.” Like our verb enjoin, injungere means “to direct or impose by authoritative order or with urgent admonition.” (Not surprisingly, enjoin is also a descendant of injungere.) Injunction has been around in English since at least the 15th century, when it began life as a word meaning “authoritative command.” In the 16th century, it developed a legal second sense applying to a court order. It has also been used as a synonym of conjunction, another jungere descendant meaning “union,” but that sense is extremely rare. (merriam-webster.com)
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday…
Here’s a thought for the day from Winston Churchill: “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. It is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”
And, on a lighter note: What do you get when you cross a ninja with a squid? Disappearing ink.
