News Update

Community Calendar for Wednesday, April 13th, 2022

From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Wednesday, April 13th, 2022.

Now, some news…

The Beaver Island Wildlife club has again arranged for the delivery of fruit and nut trees to the island and will offer them free to anyone who commits to plant and care for them.   Because the club paid for them, they’d appreciate a donation of some sort if you take a tree, but none is required. 20 apple trees will arrive by May 1. Another 100 Dunstan Chestnut trees will arrive sometime in May.  Want to be on the list to get one? Contact Jacque LaFreniere at 448-2220 or at jacquel@tds.net.

First ferry run of the season sailed out through the harbor into Lake Michigan at 8:20 this morning. amidst concerns about rising fuel costs.  New this season are non-peak season passenger fares for seniors. They’ll be $13.75 each way and available through May 20th and then again from September 12th to the end of the season.

There are still Easter Eggs on the loose over at the Beaver Island District Library and librarians there still asking for the assistance of local children in hunting them down. That’s because young eyes are the best at spotting them says new head librarian Jacquie LaFreniere.  She says she hopes kids will stop in each day, including after school, to hunt for eggs—but leave some for other kids to find.  The season continues through Saturday.

The Beaver Island Marinas operated by St. James Township are looking for attendants for this summer.  The jobs are full time and pay $16 to $19 an hour.  Current deadline for applications is April 27. Interviews will be May 11. Send your application to harbormaster dot S-T james T-W-P at G-mail dot com. [harbormaster.stjamestwp.bi@gmail.com]

A reminder that the beloved Community Easter Brunch is back after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus.  But, given the big range in scheduled church times now, it will be on Easter Saturday instead of Sunday…so on Saturday, April 16th.  Start time is 11:30. Pancake, scrambled eggs, sliced ham, Lil Gregg’s breakfast casserole, and baked French toast casserole will be provided. Bring a side dish or fruit if you wish.  Everyone is welcome. No need to dress up.  And, if you signed up, don’t forget about the C-O-A Easter dinner her at the BIC Center.  That’s today starting at 4:30. Unfortunately, that’s going to be the last of the C-O-A dinners for now because of budget constraints.

On the COVID-19 front, no new reports from the Health Center—other than a reminder that second round boosters are now available. Call the Health Center to sign up. Next update from the state comes this afternoon.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for this week: St. James Board meets this evening at 5:30 out at their township hall.  And the elks club meets Thursday at 5:00 at Peaine Township Hall.  Meeting details are in the calendar entries online.

On the fun front today, Wednesday morning, Nothing but Needles is on at the Peaine Township Hall starting at 9:00. And, Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 C-O-A will start serving a special Easter Dinner at the BIC Center.  C-O-A’s Chair Yoga, normally at 10:30 up in the Hangout, is cancelled as is Time for Art.

Thursday, Tai Chi is on at the BIC Center at 9:30. Pickleball is on, too, in the theater from 10 to noon. Games Galore is on up on the Hangout from 1:00 to 4:00.  Thursday evening, Euchre is on deck at Whiskey Point Brewing Company. Cards hit the table at 7:00.

Friday, Pickleball is on—in the Theater at the BIC Center at 10:00. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30. But, since it is Good Friday, C-O-A’s BINGO game is off and the C-O-A’s offices will close at Noon.

As we mentioned in the news, the island’s traditional Easter Brunch will be on Saturday at 11:30 over at Gregg Fellowship Hall.  All are welcome. Saturday evening, the new film version of West Side Story is coming the BIG screen with the BIG sound at the BIC Center. Great reviews for this classic musical reinterpreted by director Steven Spielberg. It’s rated PG-13. Concession stand will be open. Trailer is on the BIC Center website at bic center dot org.

Sunday is Easter. There are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship.  Times and more details are in the calendar.

Monday, Chair Yoga is on up in the Hangout.  Start time is 10:00.

Tuesday, Tai Chi is on up in the Hangout at 9:30. Pickleball is on at 10:00 in the Theater. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout. Tuesday evening, it’s Open Mic Night at the Harbour Bodega. Sign-up at 6:30. Performances start at 7:00. Special snacks available for a freewill donation along side the full Bodega menu.

BIRTHDAYS:  Craig Rosema is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Craig, and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip. But the rain has slopped things up quite a bit out of town—especially with the recent grading. So, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1970, Apollo 13 faces catastrophe 200,000 miles from Earth. Two days after launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a warning light, a loud bang, and the message “Houston, we’ve had a problem here,” puts an end to Apollo 13’s mission to the moon. An exploded oxygen tank on the spacecraft makes returning to Earth alive the new goal.

WORD OF THE DAY: bemuse (verb) [bih-MYOOZ] which means “to bewilder” or “to confuse.” Bemuse joins the prefix be-, meaning “to a great or greater degree,” with muse, “to become absorbed in thought” and especially “to think about something carefully and thoroughly.”

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Wednesday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell: “I look up at the moon and wonder, when will we be going back, and who will that be?”

On a lighter note: Why did the pillow cross the road? To collect the chicken feathers.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, April 13th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
