News Update

Community Calendar for Tuesday, April 12th, 2022

From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Tuesday, April 12th, 2022.

Now, some news…

First ferry run of the season is coming up tomorrow.  It leaves at 8:20 amidst concerns about rising fuel costs.  There is a talk of a fuel surcharge being added to fares for the season.  That will presumably be a topic of discussion at today’s Transportation Authority meeting.  That’s at noon at the Authority’s H-Q across from the ferry dock. New this season are non-peak season passenger fares for seniors. They’ll be $13.75 each way and available through May 20th and then again from September 12th to the end of the season.

We have reports this morning of Easter Eggs on the loose in the Beaver Island District Library.  Librarians there would like the assistance of local children in hunting them down. New head librarian Jacquie LaFreniere says that kids are the best Easter Egg hunters.  She says she hopes kids will stop in each day after school to hunt for eggs—but leave some for other kids to find.  The season continues through Saturday.

The Beaver Island Marinas operated by St. James Township are looking for attendants for this summer.  The jobs are full time and pay $16 to $19 an hour.  Current deadline for applications is April 27. Interviews will be May 11. Send your application to harbormaster dot S-T james T-W-P at G-mail dot com. [harbormaster.stjamestwp.bi@gmail.com]

The International Affairs Forum at Northwestern Michigan College is presenting a forum a forum and fundraiser for Ukraine Relief tomorrow evening at 6:30. It will be at the City Opera House in T-C, but a live stream will also be available.  Details on how to sign up to attend and how to donate are in today’s script online. https://www.tciaf.com/ukraine-relief-fundraiser-4-13-2022

A reminder that the beloved Community Easter Brunch is back after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus.  But, given the big range in scheduled church times now, it will be on Easter Saturday instead of Sunday…so on Saturday, April 16th.  Start time is 11:30. Pancake, scrambled eggs, sliced ham, Lil Gregg’s breakfast casserole, and baked French toast casserole will be provided. Bring a side dish or fruit if you wish.  Everyone is welcome. No need to dress up.

On the COVID-19 front, no new reports from the Health Center—other than a reminder that second round boosters are now available. Call the Health Center to sign up. Next update from the state comes tomorrow afternoon.

Here are some election deadlines to note if you are interested in running for office or getting a proposal on the ballot. April 19th is the deadline for nominating petitions for slots on the primary ballot.  April 26th is the deadline for citizens petitions for ballot issues. More information is available in the Charlevoix Courrier article linked in today’s script online: https://www.petoskeynews.com/story/news/2022/04/12/filing-deadlines-other-important-dates-coming-up-ahead-election-season/7274250001/?utm_source=petoskeynews-Daily%20Briefing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily_briefing&utm_term=list_article_thumb&utm_content=MICHIGAN-PETOSKEY-NLETTER65

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for this week: Transporattion Authority meets Tuesday at noon at their HQ across from the ferry dock. Peaine Township Board meets Tuesday evening at 7:00 at their township hall. St, James Board meets Wednesday at 5:30 out at their township hall.  And the elks club meets Thursday at 5:00 at Peaine Township Hall.  Meeting details are in the calendar entries online.

On the fun front today, Tuesday, Tai Chi is on up in the Hangout at 9:30. Pickleball is on at 10:00 in the Theater. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout.

Wednesday, Nothing but Needles is on at the Peaine Township Hall starting at 9:00. Also, there is C-O-A’s Chair Yoga at 10:30 up in the Hangout at the BIC Center. And, Wednesday afternoon starting at 4:30 the C-O-A will be serving a special Easter Dinner at the BIC Center, so Time for Art is off this week.

Thursday, Tai Chi is on at the BIC Center at 9:30. Pickleball is on, too, in the theater from 10 to noon. Games Galore is on up on the Hangout from 1:00 to 4:00.  Thursday evening, Euchre is on deck at Whiskey Point Brewing Company. Cards hit the table at 7:00.

Friday, Pickleball is on—in the Theater at the BIC Center at 10:00. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30 and at noon it’s C-O-A’s winter BINGO game also here at the BIC Center.

Saturday evening, the new film version of West Side Story is coming the BIG screen with the BIG sound at the BIC Center. Great reviews for this classic musical reinterpreted by director Steven Spielberg. It’s rated PG-13. Concession stand will be open. Trailer is on the BIC Center website at bic center dot org.

Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship.  Times and more details are in the calendar.

Monday, Chair Yoga is on up in the Hangout.  Start time is 10:00.

BIRTHDAYS:  Derek McDonough, John Albin, Kevin McDonough and Jimmy Kenwabikise are all celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Derek, John and Kevin, and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip on the island.  Over on the mainlaind, apparently US-31 is going to have some closures today on the way in from the airport to town by the Dairy Queen—so plan for some extra time going north past there if you are headed across.  And, as always, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1606, the Union Jack unites the flags of England and Scotland. By royal decree of England’s King James I, the English St. George’s Cross, and Scotland’s St. Andrew’s Cross, are brought together in one design to symbolize the new unity of their two nations.  Also on this date in 1961  a Soviet cosmonaut becomes humankind’s first space traveller. Yuri Gagarin, taking his Vostok spacecraft on a single orbit of Earth, spends 108 minutes on his mission—making today the International Day of Human Space Flight.

WORD OF THE DAY: funambulism (noun) [fyoo-NAM-buh-liz-um] which means “tightrope walking.” Back in ancient Rome, tightrope walking was a popular spectacle at public gatherings. The Latin word for “tightrope walker” is funambulus, from Latin funis, meaning “rope,” and ambulare, “to walk.” Over time, this fancy word for an impressive act of physical skill and agility also came to mean an impressive act of mental skill or agility.

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Tuesday…

Here’s a thought for the day Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin: “Looking at the earth from afar you realize it is too small for conflict and just big enough for co-operation.”

On a lighter note: Which baseball team would win a tug of war?  The New York Yankees.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, April 12th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
