Community Calendar for Tuesday, April 6th, 2021

From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Tuesday, April 6th, 2021.

First, some news…

Yesterday’s COVID-19 data from the state included another bumper crop of new cases.  There were two days of data in the report as is always the case on Mondays with an average of 5,147 new cases a day.  There were 21 new deaths for the entire period. In our eight-county region there were an average of 85 new cases as day.  Over, six of those were in Charlevoix. There was one death, which was in Grand Traverse.

The state is averaging almost 6,000 new cases a day and 29 deaths.  The number of new deaths continues to be low in comparison to the number of new cases. But, COVID-19 hospitalization numbers continue to creep up.  They are at 14.2% of regular beds statewide and 20.3% of I-C-U beds. Overall hospitalization rates remain at normal levels.

Statewide positive test rate is at 15%. It’s 16.1% in our Safe Start Zone and seven percent for Charlevoix County. New case numbers are shown heading up on the dashboard for the state, our safe start zone and Charlevoix County.

On the island, no new tests.  No tests are pending.

Complete data for our region plus summaries for the state, the T-C safe start zone and the U-P are in today’s script online.

Fire Danger Level: It’s that time of year again. Fire danger level is back. Posting now is low. Marine forecasts return next week.

TRAFFIC:  No delays inbound or outbound to the airports.  Island beltway running smoothly except for the part of it washed out at the south end.  Bridges are all clear. Still, let’s be careful out there.

BIRTHDAYS:  Karen Slanga, Nathan McDonough and Tucker Hogarth are all celebrating today.  Happy birthday to Karen, Nathan and Tucker.  And, if we missed you on the list, happy birthday to you, too, from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center.

ON THIS DAY in 1924, the US Army Air Service launches the first aerial circumnavigation of the globe, using a specially modified torpedo bomber and relay teams of pilots. Several countries had vied to be the first to accomplish the feat, but 175 days and 27,553 miles later, the US team will fly into the history books. (Bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: hoosegow (noun) [HOOSS-gow], which means: jail. In Spanish, juzgado means “panel of judges, courtroom.” The word is based on the Spanish past participle of juzgar, meaning “to judge,” which itself was influenced by Latin judicare—a combination of jus, “right, law,” and dicere,”to decide, say.” When English speakers of the American West borrowed juzgado, they recorded it the way they heard it: hoosegow. They also associated the word specifically with the jail that was usually in the same building as a courthouse. Today, hoosegow has become slang for any place of confinement for lawbreakers. (Merriam-Webster)

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…

Here’s a thought for the day: “When you talk you are only repeating what you already know. When you listen, you may learn something new.”

On a lighter note: Why don’t squash balls drink coffee?  Because they are already bouncing off the walls.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, April 6th, 2021. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
