May be an image of 1 person, boat and text that says 'ISLANDER ISLANDER BEAVER BEAVER 7 6' The Boat Company continues its battle to get at least one of its boats running. Things seemed to be progressing well on the Emerald Isle with a goal of starting yesterday, but late last week efforts to connect the boat’s newly rebuilt engines to its transmission ran into alignment problems. Teams worked through the weekend to resolve that issue and are now waiting for grouting epoxy to cure before they are able to run tests. Then, some torque adjustments can be made, and the boat taken for a test run. Meantime, the Beaver Islander has gone into dry dock and work is underway on repairing the issues that were identified for its hull. Boat Company President Tim McQueer says it is still too soon to make a good prediction on when the boats can start running, but they are working to make it as soon as possible. In the meantime, non-perishable freight that was scheduled to go can be dropped at the dock and vehicles stored at BIBCO’s offsite parking.

As BIBCO works to get its boats running on the water, experts say that a worrisome environmental issue is bubbling up in water from deep below Michigan’s ground…with little public awareness. In a threat to crops, pipes and potentially public health, the salinity of the state’s ground water is on the rise, a recently released report says. It’s the result of Michigan’s glacial past and the oceans that covered the state before that. The problem seems to be most acute now in Ottawa County in the southwest part of the state and is worse along shorelines. For now, the state is monitoring aquifers to avoid placing wells in problematic areas, but the long term solution say the experts will involve a shift in how the public thinks about water, with a new emphasis on conservation. On this day in 1959 LISP, the programming language that provides the basis for work in artificial intelligence, has its first public presentation. Created by John McCarthy, LISP offers programmers flexibility in organization. It will become the basis for many developments of A-I.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is inalienable (adjective) [in-AY-lee-uh-nuh-bul]. Something considered inalienable is impossible to take away or give up. Alien, alienable, inalienable—it’s easy enough to see the Latin word alius, meaning “other,” at the root of these three words. Alien joined our language in the 14th century, and one of its earliest meanings was “belonging to another.” By the early 1600s that sense of alien had led to alienable, an adjective describing something you can give away or transfer to another owner. The word unalienable came about as its opposite, but so did inalienable, a word most likely borrowed into English on its own from French. Inalienable is the more common form today, and although we often see both forms used to modify “rights,” it was unalienable that was used in the Declaration of Independence to describe life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…

Here’s a thought for the day from LISP creator John McCarthy: “If you want to do good, work on the technology, not on getting power.”

On a lighter note: A SQL query goes into a bar, walks up to two tables and asks, “Can I join you?”

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, April 16th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
