WVBI Community Calendar
April 24, 2024

From our Langford Family Studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Wednesday, April 24th, 2024.

First some news…

In Lansing, preliminary hearings are under way in the false electors proceedings involving felony charges brought by attorney general Danna Nessel against 15 Republicans who signed a document declaring Donald Trump the winner in Michigan in 2020. Defense lawyers say they were duped into signing something they did not understand and had no specific intent to violate the law. They asked the A-G’s special investigator whether it was possible Trump had won when the documents were signed, Agent Howard Shock said anything was possible. Among the defendants in the case is long- time Charlevoix Republican party leader John Haggard. Additional hearings are set for May.

No new word today on when the Emerald Isle might start running, but the buzz is that the Beaver Islander won’t be ready itself until mid-May.  The needed repairs to her hull need to be made section by section…and that takes time. Matt Fogg and his crew made a run to get some deliveries to the market, among other things.

While we wait for the ferries to start running, there is major work underway for the harbor in Charlevoix. The Corps of Engineers is busy removing about 13,000 cubic yards of material from the channel between Round Lake and the big lake.  That’s supposed to happen every 10 to 15 years, but equivalent work hasn’t been done since 1984.  There’ll be work underway with a barge in the channel much of the time through May 15th.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. Island beltway is running smoothly. No bridge delays. But, let’s be careful out there.

On this day in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope takes a ride to orbit on the Space Shuttle Discovery. Weighing in at 24,000-pounds and with an almost 8-foot mirror, it will transmit spectacular images of distant galaxies, black holes, nebulas, and other deep-space wonders. It is at work yet today, though it is now overshadowed by its succesor, the James Web Space Telescope in orbit around the sun at the second Lagrange point that keeps it in line with the Earth’s orbit of the sun (always shading the J-W-S-T from the sun).

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is burgeon (verb) [BER-jun], which grow or develop quickly—in other words to flourish, blossom or sprout.  Burgeon arrived in Middle English as burjonen, a borrowing from the Anglo-French verb burjuner [bur-juhn-ay], meaning “to bud or sprout.” Burgeon is often used figuratively, but usage commentators have objected to the use of burgeon to mean “to flourish” or “to grow rapidly,” insisting that any figurative use should stay true to the word’s earliest literal meaning and distinguish budding or sprouting from subsequent growing. But the sense of burgeon that indicates growing or expanding and prospering (as in “the burgeoning music scene” or “the burgeoning international market”) has been in established use for decades and is, in fact, the most common use of burgeon today.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday

Here’s a thought for the day from Edwin Hubbel, for whom the Hubbel Space Telecsope is named: “Past time is finite, future time is infinite.”

On a lighter note: What do you call a space  telescope that can’t stop running into stuff? A kaleidoscope.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, April 24th, 2024. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
