News Update

Community Calendar for Thursday, September 3rd, 2020

This is the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Thursday, September 3rd, 2020.

First, some news…

In a press conference yesterday Governor Whitmer hinted that she may have more “soon” on answers to question the Michigan High School Athletic Association has raised about fall sports down state.  That could also shed some light on when gyms, theaters, entertainment venues and the like will be allowed to reopen downstate.  Word could be out in the “coming days” according to the governor.  Up North and in the U-P some fall sports are on because those zones are in a different recovery phase than downstate.

Things continue to look good for school on the island in F2F mode, and fall sports, too.  Safe Start data for our zone show the positive test rate at 2.2%, which is in the low risk zone.  The number of new cases per million is 17.8, which is medium risk and still dropping quickly. Health Center report this morning shows nothing new. No more tests run to add to the total so far of 168.  Of those, 160 are back as negative, two pending and six positives—with five of those for folks who’ve left the island and the remaining one more than 30 days old.

State health officials reported 524 new confirmed cases yesterday.  There were 14 new deaths. There are now 103,710 confirmed cases since the crisis began.  Of those 20,324 are active.  Death toll stands at 6,509. New case seven day running average is down again to 644.  Average for deaths is up one to 12.  M-I Safe Start Map which is still based on data from last Saturday shows a state-wide positive test rate running average at 3.0%, which is just slipping into the low risk zone and the average new case per capita rate state-wide is at 44.7 per million, which is at the low end of the high risk zone.  It looks like that number will move down a risk zone in the next few days if its current downward dive continues.

Our region had 13 new cases in yesterday’s reports. Two in Benzie, one in Emmet, six in Grand Traverse, one in Kalkaska and three in Leelanau. One new death here in Charlevoix, which is our third. Overall total of cases in our region is 877 of which 330 are less than 30 days old. There have been 31 deaths overall.  Rolling averages are 15 new cases a day and no deaths.  In the U-P there were 23 new cases and no new deaths in yesterday’s report. They now have 1,029 total cases with 476 active and 19 deaths. Averages are 15 new cases a day, no deaths.

Full county-by-county data for our region are in today’s script online along with state and region totals, plus rolling averages.

Data from 9/2/2020

Weather forecasters are warning about dangerous conditions on west Michigan beaches, especially downstate.  Eight foot and bigger waves are forecast in the southern part of the lake and the weather service says we could see seven footers up here.  Fortunately for the battered east side of the island, this blow is coming out of the west, but the lake is forecast to be rolling all around.  Probably best to plan small craft adventures and swimming on the big drink for another day.

Now, here’s what’s happening on your island.

Today, the last farmer’s Market of the season out at Paradise Bay starts at 9 and runs to 11.  There may be an in-town market at 1, too, and the in-town market is rumored to be running into the fall.  We’ll keep you posted.  That one is on King’s Highway next to the TDS building.  Pickleball Thursday 10 to noon, usual place. BICS Board Curriculum Committee meets at 3:30 at school. Today and any day, you can head down to the south end and climb the Beaver Head Light Tower. Remember to leave a donation for the Historical Society after you take in the awesome view from the top.

Friday, Art in the Harbor in front of the Community Center.  The first of the season; hopefully not the last.  Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program up in the Hangout here at the BIC Center from 10:30 to 11:30. Then, Friday afternoon some exciting events to celebrate some new sculptures for the library.  There are three new works one each by Brian Ferreby, Kevin Bowen, and Michael Fels with all curated by John Sauve.  There’ll be a dedication at the library at 3:30 followed by a reception at Whiskey Point Brewery at 4:30.

Saturday, Pickleball from 10 to noon.  Books on the Beach at 4:00 with a discussion of Thorton Wilder’s Our Town.  That’s part of the Big Read Our Town Our Island series.  Also Saturday, movies are on again at the BIC Center. 4:00 show is from Disney—a film released to Disney+ during the pandemic. It’s Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made.  Great story for our times with lots of fun for the kids as well as mom and dad. And at 7, it’s the King of Staten Island.  SNL’s Pete Davidson is a messed-up man-child who has had a case of arrested development since his firefighter father died. He spends his days smoking weed and dreaming of being a tattoo artist until events force him to grapple with his grief and take his first steps forward in life. Rated R. Both shows on the BIG screen with the BIG sound in the McDonough’s Market Theater.  Capacity is limited to comply with COVID-19 safety precautions and social distancing in family pods applies. Concession stand will be open for both shows for snacks, a meal or both. Trailers are on the BIC Center website at BIC Center dot org, or follow the BIC Center on Facebook to see them.

There are weekend services at Holy Cross on Saturday and Sunday, and Sunday services at the Christian Church and the Episcopal Mission.  Times and details are on the calendar.  Also Sunday, the final Graveyard Walk & Talk event is set for 11:30, this time back at Holy Cross.

Here’s something you can do anytime.  Head on down west side drive to Mrs. Reddings Trail and head on out to the top of the bluff where you can use the new Vince Rice Memorial Overlook.  It’s a great birding spot because it puts you at bird level view—so no more warbler’s neck according to Beth Leuck, an organizer with Beaver Island Birding Trail events.  And spectacular fall color views are too soon to come.

If you are in the shopping mood, don’t miss out on Island Treasures, the resale shop that supports the Beaver Island Fire and EMS teams.  They are on Donegal Bay Road a bit beyond the County Building on the other side of the road.  Open noon to four Thursday through Saturday.

And, if you are in a I need a place to live mood, word is there is an apartment available at Forest View.  Call Pete LoDicio for details at 448-2004.

If you are in the joining mood, both the Charlevoix Elks and the Beaver Island Currach Club are looking for members.  The Elks is a social organization focused on charity and the Beaver Island group is an auxiliary of the Charlevoix Lodge.  For more information reach out to Patrick Nugent on Facebook.  The Cutoff date for October initiation is October 7th.  The Currach Club is for folks interested in maintaining and rowing traditional Irish Currachs—a type of boat used on Arranmore and elsewhere in Ireland.  Sign up on their Facebook page.  Here’s the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/717788658768941/

Don’t forget about the BIC Center W-V-B-I 2020 Gala Auction or the BIC Center W-V-B-I 2020 Raffle.  Go to auction dot bic center dot org to bid on items in the auction and raffle dot bic center dot org to pick up raffle tickets.  You can also bid and get tickets at the BIC Center from desk.

BIRTHDAYS:  Ryley Maudrie is celebrating today. Happy birthday to Ryley and, if we missed you on that list, happy birthday to you, too, from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center.

ON THIS DAY in 1838 abolitionist Frederick Douglass escapes slavery, heads north to freedom. Born into slavery in Maryland, the future statesman and makes his third attempt to escape his bonds and head north. Dressed as a sailor and carrying false identification papers, he boards a train in Baltimore and in 24 hours will arrive at a safe house in New York City. (bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: matriculate (verb) [muh-TRIK-yuh-layt], which means: to enroll as a member of a body and especially of a college or university; to be enrolled at a college or university. Anybody who has had basic Latin knows that alma mater, a fancy term for the school you attended, comes from a phrase that means “fostering mother.” If mater is mother, then matriculate probably has something to do with a school nurturing you just like good old mom, right? Not exactly. If you go back far enough, matriculate is distantly related to the Latin mater, but its maternal associations were lost long ago—even in terms of Latin history. It is more closely related to Late Latin matricula, which means “public roll or register.” Matricula has more to do with being enrolled than being mothered, but it is the diminutive form of the Latin matrix, which in Late Latin was used in the sense of “list” or “register” and earlier referred to female animals kept for the purposes of breeding. Before we wrap up, a quick program note for you.  Baroque on Beaver leaders Robert Nordling and Matt Thomas have put together a special Baroque on Beaver REimagined Encore show for us.  They’ve collected some of the outstanding performances from this year’s virtual event along with some behind the scenes commentary on the music, composers and artists.  We’ll broadcast that this Sunday afternoon at 2 right here on WVBI.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday…

Here’s a thought for the day: “It is difficult for a student to pick a good teacher, but it is more difficult for a teacher to pick a good Student.”

On a lighter note: Why wouldn’t the electrician rewire the house?  He thought it was re-volting.

IMAGINE A SAD TROMBONE SFX

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Thursday, September 3rd, 2020.  The on-air Calendar is now on vacation through Labor Day week.  You’ll still get updates on WVBI dot net, including the latest COVID-19 tracking data and news.  But, we’re taking an on-air break through September 11th.  Until then, Kevin Boyle is away from the pest free Hogarth Pest Control Studios of the Voice of Beaver Island, but still wishing you a great day and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for reading.
