News Update

Community Calendar for Thursday, July 7th, 2022

Our no news is good news streak continues with no new tests or positive results reported by the Health Center this morning. State data released yesterday is good news for the most part as well. New case counts are down after a blip up and there is a big drop in reported deaths. Hospital data continues to look good overall. Charlevoix shows nine new reported cases in the past week and no deaths.  Our eight-county region had 25 new cases and no deaths.

Proponents of a ballot measure that would add abortion rights to the Michigan constitution say they have nearly twice the number of signatures required to get the measure on the ballot. Election law experts say the number of signatures apparently collected is extraordinary, representing about one in 10 voters in the state—the most ever collected for a ballot measure. Critics of the measure say it is an anything goes proposal.

As we head into what are typically the warmest days of the year up north, M-Live forecasters say we are in for a run of cooler weather.  The outlook through the end of the month is for cooler temperatures over much of the eastern U-S with the biggest dip down centered on the lower peninsula of Michigan.  With temps in the mid-70s on the near shore mainland and a little cooler here. It will still feel like summer…but more like the beginning or end rather than the middle.

Cool or not, July is going to be a dream-month – or maybe a dreamless month – for island dark sky buffs. With the Thunder Supermoon, two meteor showers and a comet, there’s so much to see that there might not be time to sleep at night.  The thunder super moon will rise next Wednesday on the 13th. The Comet on view has the sexy name C/2017 K2, but it is quite a sight with the right equipment—which can just be a set of binoculars.  The Meteor showers are the Southern Delta Aquarids peaking on the night of July 29 into July 30, followed by the Alpha Capricornids on the night of July 30 into July 31. There’s more info in the Dark Sky calendar at darkskyisland.org.

Bridge Michigan has selected Miles Harvey’s The King of Confidence, about the island’s James Jesse Strang, as their book club selection this month.  You can pick up a copy of the best seller at the historical society.  The online discussion is set for August 10th.

If you don’t have one already, Beaver Island E-M-S urges you to get a green address sign out on the road by your house.  The reflective numbers on them help E-M-S and other emergency services to find your house when you need it most.  The signs are available from the Fire Auxiliary for just $35. You can place an order at McDonough’s Market or online at shop dot bic center dot org.

BIRTHDAYS:  PABI President Judy Gallagher is celebrating today along with Zach Manship. Happy Birthday to Judy and Zach and, if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. Beltway is running smooth as a baby beaver’s bottom.  And the bridges are clear. But, it is busy in town especially around ferry arrival times. Plus, lots of bikers and hikers are out enjoying the wonders of the island, so, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1928 it’s the best thing ever, as sliced bread is sold for first time. Missouri’s Chillicothe Baking Company offers up packages of ‘Kleen Maid Sliced Bread,’ thanks to Otto Rohwedder’s invention, a machine that cuts loaves of bread into uniform slices. Hailed as a great advance, sliced bread will be banned for a time in 1943 as a wartime extravagance.

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY:  inscrutable (adjective) [in-SKROO-tuh-bul], which means “not readily investigated, interpreted, or understood.” Scrutinizing the inscrutable may be futile: even close scrutiny can fail to decipher it. Scrutinizing the scrutable, on the other hand, is likely to yield some understanding. All of these scrut- words have the same Latin root: scrutari, meaning “to search or examine.” While scrutiny, scrutinize, and inscrutable all prove themselves useful in everyday discourse, English speakers don’t tend to call much on scrutable, which functions as a synonym of comprehensible.

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Bette Midler: “You have to think you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread, but you have to know that you’re not.”

On a lighter note: What was the best thing before sliced bread?

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, July 7th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
