From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Thursday, February 3rd, 2022. |

First some news … Health Center is reporting two new tests with one back negative and one pending. There are now 12 cases two weeks or less old tested positive on the island. Monday’s report from the state showed a dramatic drop in new cases and downward trends across the board. While yesterday’s report shows an uptick from Monday, the overall trend continues to be down. There were about 9,400 new cases a day over the two days covered by the report pushing the seven-day running average down again to 9,479. There were an average of 17 new deaths a day plus 293 reclassified deaths—those are deaths from prior dates added to the roll. That puts the running average at 81, which includes reclassifications. In our eight-county region, there were 224 new cases a day and 10 deaths overall. 34 of the new cases were in Charlevoix County. The deaths were in Grand Traverse with four, Emmet with three, Leelanau with two and Antrim with one. There was a slight uptick in hospital utilization numbers, but will still high they continue to be on an overall downward slope. No change at our local hospitals. Today is dig-out day for much of southern Michigan, but with more snow on the way for southeast Michigan travel difficulties may continue into Friday for that region. For the most part, it appears that snow accumulation so far has fallen a bit short of forecasts. But, some schools down-state are now out of snow days—driven both by weather and pandemic issues, so some students there will have to stay later in June if more days out are racked up. The Health Center is in the market for two additions to its board. Information on applying is in today’s script online. Applications are due by February 8th. The nine member Board seeks to fill two at large positions. Board terms are three years and directors are not compensated. To apply, please send a letter which states your interest and provides the Selection Committee a little about yourself. Letters may be emailed to the attention of Ann Partridge: ann@biruralhealth.org (place “Board Application” in your “Subject” line) or mailed to Ms. Partridge c/o the Rural Health Center Board of Directors Selection Committee, PO Box 146, Beaver Island, MI 49782. Mailed application letters must be received by Tuesday February 8, 2022. Emailed applications must be received by midnight February 8, 2022. The Selection Committee will begin reviewing applications and scheduling interviews in February. Should you have any questions regarding the application process, please email ann@biruralhealth.org or phone: 231-448-2275 As for the Groundhog report…he saw his shadow, so keep the deck furniture in storage and the extra blankies handy for now. Finally, here’s a schedule note for you. A member of the BIC Center to an arm breaking fall on the ice Tuesday evening and needs to be out to recover. So, the Center is rolling back hours for a week starting tomorrow. Temporary hours will be nine to 1:00 Monday through Friday. No movies this weekend or next. Regular hours resume on Monday, February 15th. |

ON THIS DAY in 1959 Rock ‘n’ roll star Buddy Holly, 22, perishes along with fellow hit-makers Richie Valens, J.P. ‘Big Bopper’ Richardson, and their pilot, when their Beechcraft plane goes down in a storm shortly after takeoff. (Bing.com) |

WORD OF THE DAY: bona fides (noun) [boh-nuh-FYE-deez], which evidence of a person’s qualifications or achievements. Bona fides looks like a plural word in English, but in Latin it is a singular noun that literally means “good faith.” When bona fides entered English, it at first stayed very close to its Latin use, and it also kept its singular form—for example, “a claimant whose bona fides is unquestionable.” But in the 20th century, use of bona fides began to widen, and it began to appear with a plural verb in certain contexts, such as “the informant’s bona fides were ascertained.” In the law, its meaning hues to the original. Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day: “The marble not yet carved can hold the form of every thought the greatest artist has.” On a lighter note: Why did the dandelion take up gymnastics? To be a tumbleweed. |

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, February 3rd, 2022. The calendar will be taking a day off tomorrow, but will return on Monday.
