From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Thursday, February 10th, 2022. |
First some news … No updates from the Health Center. We’re now at six cases two weeks old or less that tested positive on the island. State report released yesterday afternoon continues to show good trends overall even with some typical post weekend upticks. There were an average of 3,764 new cases a day over the two days covered in the report and about 18 new deaths a day. Seven-day running average for new cases is down again to 3,890 from 5,501. Deaths including reclassifications remains unchanged at 82, but the rate for newly reported deaths continues to drop. In our region there were 78 new cases a day and seven total deaths. Charlevoix had five new cases a day. The deaths were in Benzie and Emmet with two each and Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Otsego with one each. For hospital occupancy, there was a slight uptick overall that is typical for Monday reports. The COVID-19 rates are stable. No change at our local hospitals. In BIC Center news, we have an interesting documentary Film Series coming up here at the BIC Center. Robert Cole and Jackson Smith have planned it with fish and fishing as the theme—tied to the island’s historic connection to both. The three films in the series will show up in the Hangout on Fridays at 6 starting next week. First up on the 18th—that’s next Friday—is The Seabaron, the story of a hole in the wall fish shop that’s become an iconic restaurant in Iceland. Rach Becker is working on a t-shirt sale for the Homecoming Softball tournament at Homecoming top benefit the Purdue family. Orders are due March 1st. You can find more info on the Beaver Island This and That Facebook page or send an email to programming at w-v-b-I dot net and we’ll connect you. Finally, a reminder that the BIC Center is operating with reduced opening times this week. Temporary hours will be nine to 1:00 through tomorrow. No Games Galore this week. And, no movies this weekend. Regular hours resume on Monday, February 15th. |

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island… Here’s your meeting planner for the week: Just one left. Elks club meets today at 5:00 at the Peaine Township Hall. Thursday, Tai-Chi is at 9:30 and Pickleball at 10 here at the BIC Center. And you can play Euchre this evening over at the Whiskey Point Brewing Company. Cards hit the table at 7:00. Friday, Pickleball is on again—in the Theater at the BIC Center at 10:00. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30 and at noon it’s C-O-A’s winter BINGO game also here at the BIC Center. Saturday, the Library and Historical Society continue a series of weekly workshops on using the Library Edition of Ancestry dot com. Start time is 1:00 p.m. The workshops will continue on Saturdays through February. As we noted at the top, the BIC Center will close at 1:00 on Saturday, so no movies this weekend. Regular showing resume next weekend with a pair of looks at the White House. The 4:00 show is First Kid with Sinbad and at 7:00 it’s the American President with Michael Douglas and Annette Benning. Again, those are next weekend, not this weekend. Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship. Times and more details are in the calendar. Next week, Tuesday, Tai Chi is on up in the Hangout at 9:30. Pickleball is on at 10:00 in the Theater. And the Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout. Wednesday, Nothing but Needles is on for crafters at Peaine Township Hall. That starts at 9:00. Also, it’s C-O-A’s Chair Yoga at 10:00. |

BIRTHDAYS: Elizabeth Pop is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Elizabeth, and, if we missed you on the list Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. Still, let’s be careful out there. |
ON THIS DAY in 1846 Mormons begin exodus from Illinois. Fleeing religious persecution that included the assassination of their leader, Joseph Smith, 1,600 members of what will become the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their new leader, Brigham Young, head west, where they will eventually settle in the Great Salt Lake Valley. Others head north. (Bing.com) |
WORD OF THE DAY: peremptory (adjective) [puh-REMP-tuh-ree], which means “expressive of urgency or command” or “marked by arrogant self-assurance.” Peremptory comes from Latin perimere, which means “to take entirely” or “to destroy.” The prefix per- means “thoroughly,” and emere means “to take.” Implying the removal of one’s option to disagree or contest something, peremptory stays close to its roots. (Merriam-Webster) |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Brigham Young: True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what’s right. On a lighter note: I’m thinking about sewing my jokes onto sweaters. I think people will really enjoy my knit wits. |

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, February 10th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
