First Some News

In today’s news, from a story online posted by WPBN of Traverse City, there’s an exciting development in healthcare logistics in northern Michigan. Munson Healthcare, in collaboration with Central Michigan University, is pioneering the use of drones to speed up the delivery of medical supplies and lab results.

Alison Arnold, Executive Director, CMU Rural Health Equity Institute] said, “If we’re able to innovate the delivery process, like using drone technology instead of vehicles, we can streamline time and improve access, especially in rural areas.”

The pilot program, funded by a grant to Traverse Connect, aims to make healthcare supply chains faster and more efficient.

Initially, the program will cover a small radius in Traverse City, but the ultimate goal is to expand beyond visible line of sight to other hospitals and clinics.

Baroque On Beaver Festival is happening now and through the weekend. The Festival welcomes world-class musicians from the Midwest and nationally for its ensembles each year. Past guest artists include Garrick Ohlsson, The Lincoln Trio, Martha Guth, and Kevin Cole. Recent commissions include works by Clarice Assad, Tony Manfredonia, and Mara Gibson. Now in its 23rd annual season, Baroque on Beaver is presented by the non-profit Beaver Island Performing Arts Alliance.

NAME OF DAY: Today’s BIC Center Name of the Day is August.  If that’s your name come on into the BIC Center today to claim a free drink of your choice courtesy of your friends at the Beaver Island Community Center and W-V-B-I.

BIRTHDAYS: Aiden Martin, Kim Jones, and Antionette Calles are celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Aiden, Kim and Antionette and, if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC: It’s busy in town, especially when the ferry comes in and busy by the public beach. No delays inbound or outbound to the airports.  Island beltway running smoothly.  No bridge delays. Lots of bikers and hikers, though, so let’s be careful out there.

On This Day – On August 1, 1943, 177 B-24 bombers take off from an Allied base in Libya, bound for the oil-producing city Ploiești, Romania, nicknamed “Hitler’s gas station.” The daring raid, known as Operation Tidal Wave, resulted in five men being awarded the Medal of Honor—three of them posthumously—but failed to strike the fatal blow its planners had intended.

Word of the Day – Midriff – refers to the area around a person’s middle, that is, the front of their body between the chest and the waist.

// Even the store’s winter line of clothing includes a number of midriff-baring tops, albeit paired with oversized cardigans or flannel shirts.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday

Here’s a thought for the day – Has it struck you that the music which is regarded as the most sublime in western civilization, which is the music of Bach, is called baroque? Pierre Schaeffer

On a lighter note – There was a time where all musicians and composers were broke It was during the Baroque period.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, August 1st, 2024. I’m Greg Doig reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
