Commercial fishers are catching fewer whitefish in parts of the Great Lakes – and the Anishinaabe people are trying to figure out why. The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians is looking into low reproduction rates for the fish. They say rates are good in Greenbay, but not so good on the Michigan side of Lake Michigan or elsewhere in the Great Lakes. While all of the causes are not known, but tribal experts say that the many free flowing rivers that feed Green Bay are a help with many miles upstream before any dams. That’s not the case in Michigan. The Odawa tribe is looking at other issues such as possible bacterial infections in eggs, whether getting the fish out of the sterile hatchery tanks and into rivers might help. With the official ending of the COVID Public Health Emergency coming up this week, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan has released updated C-D-C guidance on vaccinations. Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island… On the fun front today, Monday. no planned community activities. B-I-C-S AP Calc students have their exams today. They are well prepared and will do well. Afterward, Monday is Sliders Day at the Bodega while the Shamrock has all-you-can-eat pizza and salad for dinner. Tuesday, Talking Threads take the day off to make way for meetings at the township hall. Pickleball is on from 10:00 to noon in the Theater at the BIC Center. The Charlevoix Veteran’s Affairs Office will hold a Veteran’s Social at the BIC Center from 11:00 to 2:00. Veterans 60 and older will get free C-O-A meal vouchers to use later, there’ll be donuts and cookies—and info on using veteran’s benefits. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout. At the Bodega it’s Taco Tuesday. And, Tuesday evening, it’s trivia night at the BIC Center. Let’s Get Quizzical kicks off at 6:00 with the 70s and 80s as the topic. There’ll be snacks, the Concession Stand will be open, and you are welcome to bring your own beverage and some food to share if you like. Wednesday, Time for Art is from 5:00 to 7:00 at the BIC Center. Celebrate Your Creative Self is the topic. Texture surfaces with paints and then embellish them to create landscapes, seascapes and more. And the special at the Bodega on Wednesday is a Coney Dog and fries. Thursday, C-O-A has chair Yoga set at the Peaine Township Hall for 9:30. Pickleball is 10:00 to noon in the Theater at the BIC Center. And C-O-A has Bingocize, a health information game based on BINGO out at the Peaine Township Hall at 10:30. Women’s Bible Study is on the calendar over at the Christian Church. That’s at 10:00. The resale shop is open from noon to 4. At 1:00, there’s Story Hour for preschoolers at the library. Meantime, its Italian Day this Thursday at the Bodega and Burger and a Beer night at the Shamrock. Also, Euchre is on tap at Whiskey Point Brewery Thursday evening. Cards hit the table at 7:00. Friday kicks off with Senior Coffee and Donuts at 8:00 at the BIC Center. To work off the donuts, Pickleball is on from 10:00 to noon in the Theater. And, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on at 10:30 up in the Hangout. Re-sale Shop is open again from noon to 4:00. Games Galore is 1:00 to 4:00 in the Hangout. And, Friday is Pizza Night at Dalwhinnies Eat in or take out. Just get your order in before 7:00 p.m. Saturday, Talking Threads meets at 9:00 at Peaine Township Hall. The Resale Shop will be open from noon to 4:00. Lego Club is at the library at 1:00. Building fun for all ages. At BIC Center Saturday movies are on at 4:00 and 7:00. Justice League R-W-B-Y Super Heroes and Huntsmen Part One is the matinee at 4:00. Super heroes from multiple worlds team up to beat the bad guys in this new release with classic animation. It’s rated PG. The evening show is Living at 7:00. Bill Nighy stars as a man in his 60s who moves into a care home after learning he has a terminal illness—to discover life and friendship. It’s a heartwarming story that’s great shows for the whole family. Rated PG-13.

The bubbly beverage is called Coca-Cola, a patent medicine said to ease ailments such as dyspepsia, headache, impotence, and morphine addiction. The drink will become rather popular as time goes by. And, on this day in 1945, Germany unconditionally surrenders to the Allies ending World War Two in Europe.

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is deepfake (noun) [DEEP-fayk] which refers to an image or recording that has been convincingly altered and manipulated to misrepresent someone as doing or saying something that was not actually done or said. The old maxim “things aren’t always as they seem” seems more true than ever in the age of deepfakes. A deepfake is an image, or a video or audio recording, that has been edited using an algorithm to replace the person in the original with someone else (especially a public figure) in a way that makes it look authentic. The fake in deepfake is transparent: deepfakes are not real. The deep is less self-explanatory: this half of the term is specifically influenced by deep learning—that is, machine learning using artificial neural networks with multiple layers of algorithms. The first known use of deepfake appeared in 2018. |
