First some news… The Island had two representatives at a meeting earlier this week in East Jordan with Michigan’s High-Speed Internet Office known as Mi Hi. Dick Mulvihill and your reporter were there to provide input on island connectivity concerns and to learn about MiHi plans to disburse Michigan’s share of the Federal BEAD grant program which includes 42 billion and some change for nationwide, last-mile broadband connectivity. Before that, on Monday and Tuesday, the island hosted Ben Fineman from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration—or N-T-I-A—at meetings to discuss BEAD grant opportunities for the island. There’ll be a community meeting the week of the 22nd to discuss the choices the island faces heading into the grant process. The Traverse City Film Festival has pulled the plug on its signature event saying that last year’s festival will be the last. Michael Moore, the Flint filmmaker who spearheaded the festival, said it was better to end while the group was financially ahead. The festival was hurt by cancellation during COVID. Moore says the focus going forward will be bringing great and historic films to the State Theater and Bijou by the Bay, the two T-C theaters it festival proceeds helped renovate. The Charlevoix Courrier was reporting 100 years ago today that mail service to the island had been suspended. The ice was too poor for delivery by foot, dog-sled or sleigh, so St. James Postmaster William Boyle had ordered all mail held in Charlevoix until the navigation season began. |

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island… Here’s your meeting planner for next week: The School Board meets Monday at 6:30. Christian Church Board meets Monday evening, too, at 7:00. Beaver Island Transportation Authority meets Tuesday at noon and the Peaine Township board meets that evening at 5:30. St. James Township Board meets Wednesday evening at 5:30. Elks meet Thursday evening at 5:30. That’s it for the week. Meeting locations and additional details are in the calendar entries online. On the fun front today, Friday, Pickleball is on from 10:00 to noon in the Theater. And, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on at 10:30 up in the Hangout. Re-sale Shop is open again from noon to 4:00. Games Galore is 1:00 to 4:00 in the Hangout. The Historical Society and the Northern Islander have a reception to celebrate the launch of the paper from the Print Shop. It’s a chance to meet the new team. Alongside that the Chamber has set their Spring After Hours event. After some time at the Print Shop, they’ll head up the street to the Emerald Isle Inn for a look at the changes there. And, don’t forget. Friday is Pizza Night at Dalwhinnies Eat in or take out. Just get your order in before 7:00 p.m. Saturday, The Resale Shop will be open from noon to 4:00. Lego Club is at the library at 1:00. Building fun for all ages. At BIC Center Saturday movies are on at 4:00 and 7:00. Mummies is the matinee at 4:00. Three ancient mummies wind up in modern-day London to recover a royal ring stolen by an English archaeologist. The evening show is Champions at 7:00. Woody Harrelson stars as a washed-up N-B-A coach assigned to coach a team of players with different abilities. It’s a heartwarming, fun-filled story of a team coming together to win more than basketball games. Both are great shows for the whole family.
Sunday there are services at the Christian Church at 10:00 and mass at Holy Cross at 12:15. Also Sunday Brunch at the Shamrock from 9:00 to 2:00. Looking ahead to next week… Monday: no planned community activities. B-I-C-S A-P Calc students have their exams today. They are well prepared and will do well. Afterwards, Monday is Sliders Day at the Bodega while the Shamrock has all-you-can-eat pizza and salad for dinner. Tuesday, Talking Threads will be crafting out at the Peaine Township Hall starting at 9:00. Pickleball is on from 10:00 to noon in the Theater at the BIC Center. The Charlevoix Veteran’s Affairs Office will hold a Veteran’s Social at the BIC Center from 11:00 to 2:00. Veterans 60 and older will get free C-O-A meal vouchers to use later, there’ll be donuts and cookies—and info on using veteran’s benefits. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout. At the Bodega it’s Taco Tuesday . Wednesday, Time for Art is from 5:00 to 7:00 at the BIC Center. And the special at the Bodega on Wednesday is a Coney Dog and fries. Thursday, C-O-A has chair Yoga set at the Peaine Township Hall for 9:30. Pickleball is 10:00 to noon in the Theater at the BIC Center. And C-O-A has Bingocize, a health information game based on BINGO out at the Peaine Township Hall at 10:30. Women’s Bible Study is on the calendar over at the Christian Church. That’s at 10:00. The resale shop is open from noon to 4. At 1:00, there’s Story Hour for preschoolers at the library. Meantime, its Italian Day this Thursday at the Bodega and Burger and a Beer night at the Shamrock. Also, Euchre is on tap at Whiskey Point Brewery Thursday evening. Cards hit the table at 7:00. |

BIRTHDAYS: Pam Moxham, Andrew Kenwabikise, Doug Meaney and Shannon Dutk are celebrating today on what would have been my dad’s 99th birthday. Tomorrow, Christy Albin, Adam Martin, Jessica Crandall, Erin Holmes and Lotta Garrett blow out the candles. Sunday, Jacque LaFreniere, Dave Avery, Tessa Jones, and Jackson Kirby celebrate. Happy Birthday to Tessa, Jacque, Lotta, Erin, Jessica, Christy, Shannon, Pam, Jackson, Dave, Adam, Doug, and Andrew and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |

ON THIS DAY in 1862 a small Mexican force garrisoned in Puebla defends against an attack by French troops, causing the invaders to retreat. The anniversary of the battle will become a regional holiday in Puebla. In California, Mexican Americans will begin celebrating the victory in 1863. Their annual observance will gain popularity across the US and evolve into a general celebration of Mexican heritage and culture no known as Cinco de Mayo. 99 years later, Naval officer, test pilot, and astronaut Alan Shepard takes a 15-minute suborbital flight in Freedom 7 to become the first American in outer space. A decade later he’ll venture somewhat farther and visit the moon.

WORD OF THE DAY: Our Merriam-Webster Word of the Day is eponymous (adjective) [ih-PAH-nuh-mus] which used to describe something named for a person or group (as in “Merriam-Webster, an eponymous publishing company named for George and Charles Merriam and Noah Webster”), or a person or group whose name is used for something (as in “the company’s eponymous founders”). What’s in a name? If the name is eponymous, a name is in the name: an eponymous brand, café, river, or ice cream is named for someone or something. And because English is beastly sometimes, the one lending the name to the brand, café, river, or ice cream can also be described as eponymous. This means that if Noah Webster owns a bookstore called “Webster’s Books,” it’s an eponymous bookstore, and Noah himself is the bookstore’s eponymous owner. Most of the time, though, we see eponymous describing a thing named for a person—for example, an eponymous brand named for a designer, or a band’s eponymous album titled only with the band’s name. The related word eponym is less ambiguous: it refers to the one for whom someone or something is named. At our hypothetical “Webster’s Books,” Noah Webster is the bookstore’s eponym. Appropriately enough, the Greek root of both words is onyma [on-nee-ma], meaning “name.” |
