News Update

Community Calendar for Monday, March 7th, 2022

From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Monday, March 7th, 2022.

First some news …

Yet another no news is good news day on COVID-19 data front at the Health Center. Their tally has no positive tests in the last two weeks and no tests pending. They did update the totals for February over the weekend to add three more tests, but they were all back negative.

Data from the state released on Friday continues to show good trends. New case counts and new deaths continue to fall with the running averages now at 830 for new cases and 47 for deaths including reclassifications. There were 20 new cases and four deaths in our region during the two days covered by the report. Four of the new cases were in Charlevoix County.  The deaths were in Antrim, Emmet, Grand Traverse and Kalkaska with one each. Hospital utilization overall is near normal.  COVID-19 occupancy remains elevated but is down dramatically from its peaks.  Locally, there are no COVID-19 patients at Munson in Charlevoix. McLaren in Petoskey has six with one in the I-C-U.

In line five news, a new report created for a gas and oil industry group predicts gasoline and diesel prices will jump and stay high in this region if Enbridge Energy’s Line 5 is shut down. Increase of between 9.47 percent and 11.66 percent are predicted.  Opponents of Line 5 and the tunnel to house a replacement dispute those conclusions.  They say the report assumes two state refineries would shut down, but that there could be other sources to keep them open. The report authors say that isn’t correct.

As Cindy Ricksgers and others have noted in Facebook posts, people from around the world are booking an unprecedented number of Air B-N-B nights at homes in Ukraine.  They have no intention of visiting, of course.  They just want to get money directly to people as a way to help out in the battle against the Vladimir Putin’s invasion of their country.  On March 2nd and 3rd more than 61,000 nights in Ukraine were booked according to air B-N-H-B.

On the jobs front, with Patrick McGinnity leaving and Jaquie LaFreniere moving into the head librarian spot, the library is looking for a new assistant librarian.  Applications are due by March 15.

On the weather front, a reminder that travel could be difficult on the mainland today and into tomorrow with snow forecast across the state—with two to four inches of accumulation.  Looks like the snow-rain line has moved north a bit, but Traverse City south to Grand Rapids and west to Port Huron will all get enough snow to slow things down.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for the week: Transportation Authority meets on Tuesday at noon at their H-Q across from the ferry dock. St. James Planning Commission meets Tuesday evening at 6:00 at the Township Hall. Peaine Township board meets that evening at 7:00 at their Township Hall. B-I-C-S Committee of the Whole meets at 5:30 Wednesday evening at school and the St. James Board meets at the same time at the Township Hall. Elks Club meets Thursday evening at 5:00 at Peaine Township Hall. More details are in the calendar entries for each meeting in the calendar entries online.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30 and at noon it’s C-O-A’s winter BINGO game also here at the BIC Center. And, Friday afternoon join B-I-C-S students to enjoy a screening of the hit film Alaskan Nets.  It’s the true story of a basketball team from a remote, indigenous fishing village that wins the state basketball championship in Alaska. Showtime is 4:00.  No admission, but a freewill donation will be collected to benefit the sports program at B-I-C-S. Concession stand will be open.  The trailer is on the BIC Center website at bic center dot org.

Saturday, afternoon there are two more movies are on at the BIC Center.  The 4:00 show is War of the Buttons. Filmed in Ireland, it’s the story of the children of Ballydowse and Carrickdowse who go to war after school but have to finish by supper. It’s a rollicking story of growing up in a more innocent time. Great for the whole family. Rated P-G. At 7:00 it’s Waking Ned Devine, another story from Ireland. When one of their townsfolk wins the lottery—and has a heart attack when learning the news, the rest of the town figures they can outsmart the bib city boys and collect the winnings. Here’s to Ned Devine.  Another great story and award-winning film. Rated PG. Both shows on the BIG screen with the BIG sound. Concession Stand open for both. Trailers for those shows and the film series are on the BIC Center website at bic center dot org.

Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship.  Times and more details are in the calendar.

BIRTHDAYS:  None on our list today, but, if we missed you on the list Happy Birthday to you from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  Our W-V-B-I virtual octocopter is out of the shop and once again flying high in the skies above the island and it spies…no traffic. None, nada, zip.  Still, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1965, marching for civil rights for African Americans, hundreds of unarmed and peaceful protesters cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, and are set upon by state troopers wielding billy clubs and tear gas. Public disgust at ‘Bloody Sunday’ as the incident came to be known will help galvanize support for passage of the Voting Rights Act. (Bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: compendious (adjective) [kum-PEN-dee-us], which means means “concise” or “comprehensive.” Compendious comes from Latin compendium, meaning “saving,” “shortcut,” and, in its most literal sense, “that which is weighed together.” Compendium has its source in the Latin verb compendere, meaning “to weigh together.” (Merriam-Webster)

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Monday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Martin Luther King: “A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right.”

On a lighter note: What’s the difference between a starfish and Vladimir Putin? One is brainless, spineless, and impossible to reason with.

The other one is a starfish.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, March 7th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
