Community Calendar for Monday, June 24th, 2019

From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Monday, June 24th, 2019.
First some news…
M-Live is reporting that the Lake Michigan Huron basin is expected to join the other Great Lakes with record high water levels when the numbers are in for this month. Lake Michigan-Huron has risen 1.8 inches in the past seven days and 3.5 inches this month. Heavy rain on June 20 and another widespread heavy rain early this week are dumping prodigious amounts of water into the lakes, with the ground already saturated. The rise of 1.8 inches this past week means another 1.4 trillion gallons have made their way into Lake Michigan-Huron in just seven days.
St. James Township is working on relief for homeowner’s affected by the rising waters, and looking at proposals to drain some water from Font Lake, which is also at record levels.

Now a look at Phyllis’s Facebook post for today…
ON THIS DATE in 2011, New York legalizes same-sex marriage. It becomes the sixth state, and by far the largest population-wise, to do so. Thirty more states will follow until 2015, when the Supreme Court of the United States will make it legal nationally in the landmark civil rights case Obergefell v. Hodges.
DID YOU KNOW: every so often, a rumor starts on the internet that says natural redheads will become extinct by the year 2060. Lucky for gingers everywhere, this is a myth. It’s true that the gene that causes red hair is recessive, meaning that both parents must have it for their child to have red hair. However, even non-redheads can carry the red hair gene, and it can pop up unexpectedly in generations down the line. Imagine that. Everything on the internet isn’t true. Good thing you have radio to rely upon.
WORD OF THE DAY: demur (dih-MUR) which means to make objection, especially on the grounds of scruples; take exception; object. The verb demur comes via Old French demorer ultimately from Latin dēmorārī “to linger, delay, hold up,” its original, now obsolete meaning in English. In the 17th century demur acquired its usual senses in contemporary English “to object, take exception to,” and especially its legal sense “to make or interpose a demurral,” which is a pleading that admits the facts of an opponent’s proceeding but denies any entitlement to legal relief, and that also causes a delay in the proceedings until the point or pleading is settled. Demur entered English in the 13th century.
Birthdays: None on our list today for the island, but Comedian Conan O’Brien is celebrating. Happy birthday to him, and if your name is missing from our list, happy birthday to you—from all of us at W-V-B-I and Beaver Island Community Center.
Now, here’s a reminder about the PABI Summer Auction. Auction items are filling up the lobby. You can bid on a huge variety of items—from a stay at Deerwood to fishing trips to gorgeous original art…birding kits, firewood, home décor. Too much to go over here, so you’ll have to come down to the BIC Center and see it. Or, if you aren’t on the island, you can see items on the BIC Center web site starting later this week. All proceeds from the auction go to help support operation of the BIC Center and W-V-B-I.
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… Here’s a thought today from Conan O’Brien: “Work hard, be kind, and amazing things will happen.”
On a the lighter note … What did the football say to the broken vending machine? Give me my quarter back..
