From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Friday, February 11th, 2022. |
|
First some news … No updates from the Health Center. We’re now at six cases two weeks old or less that tested positive on the island. Next report from the state comes out this afternoon. We’ll cover that Monday. With states backing off on mask requirements, some are wondering when the local health department will back off on their mask requirement for schools. We checked with them. They say that while they continue to evaluate the situation, they have no current plans to repeal the mandate. By the way, if you are hunting for K-N 95 masks, we understand that they are available at the Health Center and the C-O-A. Call in advance for pick-up information. The Peaine Township Board has authorized Supervisor Tilly to post for Darrell Butler’s job with the township, that after Darrell informed folks he was moving on. Among his tasks are keeping the runways plowed at the municipal airport. He’s leaving on February 28th. Pay will be up to $35 an hour. The Emergency Services Authority met yesterday in a special meeting to deal with Cody Randall’s resignation as E-M-S director. His last day is the 28th as well. The job will be posted with Bob Turner and Tammy Radionoff charged with interviewing candidates. In the meantime Katharine will serve as the interim director. Finally, a reminder that the BIC Center is operating with reduced opening times this week. Temporary hours will be nine to 1:00 through tomorrow. No Games Galore this week. And, no movies this weekend. Regular hours resume on Monday, February 15th. |

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island… Here’s your meeting planner for next week: The Waste Management Committee meets on Tuesday at 1:00 at the Peaine Township Hall. B-I-A Board meets at 4:00 at the BIC Center. St. James Public Works Committee meets Wednesday at 11:00 at the St. James Township Hall. The Joint Telecommunications Advisory Committee meets Thursday at 4:30 at the BIC Center. Library Board meets at 5:00 at the library. And that’s it. More details are in the calendar entries online. Friday, Pickleball is on again—in the Theater at the BIC Center at 10:00. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30 and at noon it’s C-O-A’s winter BINGO game also here at the BIC Center. Saturday, the Library and Historical Society continue a series of weekly workshops on using the Library Edition of Ancestry dot com. Start time is 1:00 p.m. The workshops will continue on Saturdays through February. As we noted at the top, the BIC Center will be closed this Saturday, so no movies this weekend. Regular showing resume next weekend with a pair of looks at the White House. The 4:00 show is First Kid with Sinbad and at 7:00 it’s the American President with Michael Douglas and Annette Benning. Again, those are next weekend, not this weekend. Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship. Times and more details are in the calendar. Next week, Tuesday, Tai Chi is on up in the Hangout at 9:30. Pickleball is on at 10:00 in the Theater. And the Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout. Wednesday, Nothing but Needles is on for crafters at Peaine Township Hall. That starts at 9:00. Also, it’s C-O-A’s Chair Yoga at 10:00. Thursday, Tai-Chi is at 9:30 and Pickleball at 10 here at the BIC Center. And you can play Euchre this evening over at the Whiskey Point Brewing Company. Cards hit the table at 7:00. |

TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. Still, let’s be careful out there. |
|
ON THIS DAY in 1937 General Motors recognizes an autoworker’s union. Following a six-week strike by the United Auto Workers, violent clashes with police, and Michigan’s governor calling in the National Guard, General Motors is the first American auto company to sign a union contract. Also on this date in 1966 take the first Johnniac Open Shop System out of service. It was one of the first interactive, time sharing computer systems and warrants mention here because when it didn’t understand user input, it responded with “Eh?” printed out on the terminal. Apparently, it was from the U-P. (Bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: collaborate (verb) [kuh-LAB-uh-rayt], which means “to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor.” It can also mean “to cooperate with or willingly assist an enemy of one’s country and especially an enemy who occupies it during a war.” The Latin prefix com- (C-O-M), meaning “with, together, or jointly,” is a bit of a chameleon—it has a tricky habit of changing its appearance depending on what it’s next to. If the word it precedes begins with “L”, com- becomes col- (C-O-L) (as in colleague, collect, and collide). In the case of collaborate, com- teamed up with laborare (“to labor”) to form Late Latin collaborare (“to labor together”). (Merriam-Webster) |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Friday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day: The successful warrior is the average man, with laserlike focus. On a lighter note: Why did the politician cross the road? To cross to the other party. |

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Friday, February 11th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
