We have an update on the mineral oil leak that occurred in utility cables under the straits last week. The oil leak is in two lines operated by American Transmission Company and is thought to have been caused by a ship operating in the area.
The oil is used as an insulator in the line and fills a void in the cables. An oil spill response team has extracted approximately 50% of the mineral oil out of one of the cables from a cable landing location on the shore. Efforts to vacuum the rest of mineral oil from that line and from the other line continue. According to the U-S Coast Guard, there is still no evidence of an ongoing release – but approximately 600 gallons were released before the spill was stopped.
The Coast Guard says all companies responsible for active utility lines that cross the Straits have been asked to check their lines for damage that may have been caused by this incident. So far no other damage has been found, but the utility companies are continuing to conduct assessments of their infrastructure.

interviews will proceed with representatives on both sides of the township consolidation issue. We’ll let you know as soon as we can when they will be broadcast. If you miss them on the air you’ll still be able to hear them as podcasts.

If you have questions you’d like presented to representatives from either or both sides of the Township consolidation vote, please send them to consolidation questions at w-v-b-I dot net. Or you can drop them in the mail addressed to Consolidation Questions, PABI [PABBY], P-O Box 494, Beaver Island, Michigan 4-9-7-8-2. Or just drop them by the BIC Center during regular opening hours in an envelope marked Consolidation Questions.

At our website, we’ve tried to include everything, but if we’ve missed your event you can easily add it yourself by using the handy “Post Your Event” button in the upper right of the calendar or by sending an email with the details to<>. And, we can make it easy for your events to show up in a nice calendar on your website, too, so you only have to post them once. Your website can show only your events or those plus other categories from the calendar that you choose.

To help coordinate the events we’ve taken the major events for Summer 2018 and compiled them into a nifty little Celebrate Summer 2018 online calendar. Just point your browser at to get the lowdown on everything planned so far for next summer. Then check back from time to time as more events will be added as dates are firmed up.

Still no delays to report on Beaver Island.

Hey, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

To Lucas, Sophia and all our listeners, you can’t change someone, but you can be someone that others may want to change for.

On a lighter note, what did the Zen master say to the hotdog vendor? Make me one with everything!!!
That’s the WVBI Community Calendar for Tuesday April 10th, 2018.
