On this date in 1873, photographer William Henry Jackson captured the first photograph of Colorado’s elusive Mount of the Holy Cross, providing proof of its existence. His images, published in popular magazines, showcased the rugged western wilderness to Americans. Jackson discovered the “cross of snow” on a Colorado mountain peak. The cross was formed by intersecting ravines that sheltered snow, creating a temporary cross shape.
