Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep parent Stellantis announced yesterday that it plans to invest $13 billion over the next four years to expand U.S. manufacturing—boosting production by 50 percent and adding more than 5,000 jobs. Governor Gretchen Whitmer says that includes about 900 new positions in Michigan. The automaker says the move will fund five new models, including a Detroit-built Dodge Durango and a new midsize truck in Toledo. An 18-year-old Petoskey motorcyclist was killed Monday night in a crash with an S-U-V at Intertown and Eppler Roads in Resort Township. The Emmet County Sherriff’s office says speed was a factor in the accident. With help from a million dollars in state funding secured by Representative Parker Fairbairn, the Charlevoix Township Fire Department will soon buy a new 100-foot aerial platform truck. The Department chief says the $2.5-million rig will replace a 30-year-old unit and boost fire protection for both downtown Charlevoix and surrounding rural areas. A new report from the Commonwealth Fund ranks Michigan 19th in the nation for vulnerability to environmental risks and clean-energy policy strength. The state scored well for energy efficiency and low flood risk, but lagged in air quality, emissions, and extreme heat exposure. Researchers say stronger clean-energy and air-quality policies are key to protecting public health—especially as Michigan faces more unhealthy-air days from wildfire smoke. If you’ve been waiting to take the new bridge from Detroit to Canada, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. The Gordie Howe International Bridge is now expected to open in early 2026. Construction began in 2018 and is nearly complete, but officials say they need more time for testing and safety checks. The half-mile-long span will be North America’s longest cable-stayed bridge, linking Detroit and Windsor with 16 toll lanes and new ports of entry on both sides. On this date in 1900, near Burt Lake in northern Michigan, the entire village of the Burt Lake Band of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians was burned by a sheriff and his deputies at the direction of a local land speculator, who claimed to own the land via tax titles. Historians say the injustice was enabled by state and federal officials who misinterpreted, ignored, or denied treaty protections granted in the 1830s and 1850s to the Burt Lake Band. Interlochen Public Radio’s Points North show has an extended story on this. A link to it is in today’s script online. https://www.interlochenpublicradio.org/podcast/points-north/2024-05-24/a-struggle-for-justice Photo of Burt Lake Indian Village from 1890. Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is coalesce (verb) [koh-uh-LESS], which means to come together to form one group or mass. As is the case with many words, the meaning of this word equals the sum of its parts. It joins the prefix co-—meaning “together”—with the Latin verb aléscere (ah-LESS-keh-reh), meaning “to grow.” To coalesce is to grow together or unite—like ideas blending into one movement or fans rallying around a cause. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Ford Mustang champion Lee Iacoca, born on this day in 1924: “The right decision is the wrong decision if it’s made too late.” |
On a lighter note… What does a mustang order at Starbucks? A Mach-e auto. |
