Passengers on a luxury cruise ship in Lake Superior had some weather trouble yesterday. They were scheduled to make a stop near the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula in the U-P yesterday, but the crew decided it was too rough to run the tenders from the boat to shore. So the Viking Octantis, a polar capable ship, sailed on by headed to Mackinaw island. The ship is scheduled to return to Houghton Michigan several more times this summer. Backers of a petition drive to repeal a 1978 public health law that empowered local health departments to issue emergency orders like the one that required masking at schools last fall say they won’t submit the petition. They say that even though they have the minimum number of signatures, they don’t have enough to survive expected challenges, so they’ve decided to abandon the effort. They say they will press for legislative action after the election in the fall. Critics have decried the petition drive as an attack on the expertise and independence of public health officials. Whitmer already vetoed nearly identical legislation. The Beaver Island Chamber has an After Hours meeting set for this evening. Things get underway at the Beaver Island Gallery at 5:30 with a chance to see new offerings there and then move on to the Emerald Isle Inn with a tour to see improvements made over the winter. Drinks and appetizers will be served. Chamber Director Paul Cole says all are welcome and that you can join in at any point in the evening. Things wrap up at 7:30. |

TRAFFIC: None. But, the rain last night will make things messy and fawns are dropping everywhere. So, let’s be careful out there. And remember, if you see a fawn on its own, just leave it be. Mom will be back. |

ON THIS DAY in 1967 the Beatles usher in the era of the rock album. The Beatles’ eighth studio LP sees the band reinvent itself, and in the process, the entire landscape of modern popular music. ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band will be a smash hit and a revelation for critics, and decades later, many will still call it a work of art that qualifies as the best rock album in history. Also on this day in 1980 the nation’s first 24-hour news channel launches. CNN signs on from its headquarters in Atlanta and will go on to shift the TV news cycle from 30-minute nightly network broadcasts to 24/7 coverage. |

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: behest (noun) [bih-HEST], which is an authoritative order or an urgent prompting. Behest is an ancient word: it is almost a thousand years old—and no I wasn’t here when it was invented. But, I’m told it was formed from the prefix be- and the verb hātan (“to command” or “to promise”), and its Old English ancestor was used exclusively in the sense of “promise,” a now-obsolete meaning that continued on in Middle English especially in the phrase “the land of behest.” The “command” meaning of behest is also ancient but it’s still in good use, typically referring to an authoritative order. Behest is now also used with a less weighty meaning; it can refer to an urgent prompting, as in “a repeat performance at the behest of the troupe’s fans.” |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Wednesday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from C-N-N founder Ted Turner: “You can never quit. Winners never quit, and quitters never win.” On a lighter note: What did the pop corn say to the baby corn? You’ve got your mother’s ears. |

Water Temps: 49 at White Shoal. Still a chilly 38 at the mid-lake buoy southwest of Gull Island. No other stations reporting. Those temps are cold enough to do you in pretty quickly if you wind up in the water with no way to get out. If you are out in a small craft, remember to dress for the water not the weather. |
