Yesterday was the deadline to submit petitions for ballot initiatives for the November election. Out of ten signature campaigns for proposals that were underway, only one turned things in. Michiganders for Fair Lending submitted signatures for a proposal that would impose new regulations on pay-day lenders. Backers of a petition to require voter ID at the ballot box say they want to be sure to have enough signatures, so they will submit their proposal later in a procedure that would bring the measure before the state legislature with no opportunity for veto by the governor if it passed. In other election news, the Michigan Court of claims has denied Perry Johnson’s appeal of his exclusion from the primary ballot by the State Board of Canvassers. He may still appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court, but the odds look long. Fellow front runner James Craig’s appeal is still pending before the court of claims, but he made arguments similar to those made by Perry, which the Court of Claims says it found inelegant. The result could be a big shakeup in the race for the Republican nomination for the governor’s race. Many islanders grew up with Vernors ginger ale being offered both as a refreshing cold pop on a warm day and a tonic for upset stomachs and other ailments. Soon, there will be another option from Vernors—the first in decades. It’s a Black Cherry flavored ginger pop. And, folks in Michigan—Vernor’s home—will get the first taste. Look for it at McDonough’s and other pop places on the island soon. The Beaver Island Chamber’s After Hours event planned for last evening wound up being canceled out of COVID-19 concerns. Paul Cole says the event will be reschedule as soon as is practical so folks have a chance to meet and greet and get a peek at the improvements at 5the Emerald Isle Inn. |

ON THIS DAY in 1953 A young queen is crowned in Westminster Abbey. In the first major event to be televised internationally, Elizabeth Windsor, 25, is crowned Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Sixteen months in preparation, the coronation hosts 8,000 guests to witness the ceremony from inside London’s Westminster Abbey, while millions across Europe watch on live TV. |

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: meld (verb) [MELD], which means “to blend or mix together.” As a verb used when things are blending or being blended together, meld dates only to the first half of the 20th century. In its early days, the word attracted some unfavorable attention. Those who didn’t like it tended to perceive it as a misuse of an older meld meaning “to declare or announce (a card or cards) for a score in a card game” (such as pinochle or gin rummy). But the more recent meld, a blend of melt and weld, was an entirely new coinage suggesting a smooth and thorough blending of two or more things into a single, homogeneous whole. The word is no longer controversial. |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from her highness Queen Elizabeth: “The world is not the most pleasant place. Eventually, your parents leave you and nobody is going to go out of their way to protect you unconditionally. You need to learn to stand up for yourself and what you believe and sometimes, pardon my language, kick some ass.” On a lighter note: What gaming console do Kings and Queens use the most? The Royal Wii. |

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, June 2nd, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |

Water Temps: 47 at White Shoal. Still a chilly 38 at the mid-lake buoy southwest of Gull Island. No other stations reporting. Those temps are cold enough to do you in pretty quickly if you wind up in the water with no way to get out. If you are out in a small craft, remember to dress for the water not the weather. |
