The Beaver Islander had an unexpected short trip on Monday. It headed out and within minutes turned back to the dock with some sort of trouble. Passengers were ultimately taken across by the Emerald Isle, which is supposed to be headed to the dry dock for several weeks. We’re following up with BIBCO on their plans. James Craig and Perry Johnson have sued the State Board of Canvassers seeking spots on the Republican primary ballot for governor ahead of this fall’s election. They say that the board improperly excluded valid signatures. A quick ruling is likely given the need to finalize ballots by June 3rd. There was a big turn-out for Memorial Day on the weekend with the ferries and plans packed, restaurants and pubs busy and great turnouts for the three big events of the weekend. The hall was packed for the Is Everybody Happy Party for Ed Palmer. And, the Warblers on the Water birding festival drew capacity attendance for many of its trips as well as crowds of 30 to 40 for three presentations at the BIC Center. And, there were about 150 people at the AMVETS memorial day remembrance ceremony at Veteran’s Memorial Park yesterday. If you missed that, you can catch it as a podcast on our podcast page at w-v-b-I dot net. |

ON THIS DAY in 1859 London’s parliament building gets a really large timepiece. Set 316 feet above the Houses of Parliament, a new clock looks out over London, calibrated twice daily with Greenwich Observatory to ensure exact timekeeping. The booming chimes from its 13.5-ton ‘Big Ben’ bell, and its four 23-foot-diameter clock faces, will come to symbolize London. Also on this day in 1921 what has become known as the Tulsa race massacre begins in what was then known as the ‘Black Wall Street.’ The nation’s wealthiest African-American neighborhood, the Greenwood district of Tulsa, OK, is attacked by gangs of marauding whites. When the Tulsa race massacre ends the next day, 35 city blocks have been burned, hundreds injured, as many as 300 are dead, and 10,000 left homeless. |

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: ephemeral (adjective) [ih-FEM-uh-rul], which means “lasting a very short time.” In its aquatic immature stages, the mayfly (order Ephemeroptera) has all the time in the world—or not quite: among the approximately 2,500 species of mayflies, some have as much as two years, but a year is more common. But in its adult phase, the typical mayfly hatches, takes wing for the first time, mates, and dies within the span of a few short hours. This briefest of heydays makes the insect a potent symbol of life’s ephemeral nature. When ephemeral (from the Greek word ephēmeros, meaning “lasting a day”) first appeared in print in English in the late 16th century, it was a scientific term applied to short-term fevers, and later, to organisms (such as insects and flowers) with very short life spans. Soon after that, it acquired an extended sense referring to anything fleeting and short-lived, as in “ephemeral pleasures.” |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Tuesday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day: “Sometimes your sole purpose in life is to serve as a warning to others.” On a lighter note: How do cats make such fluffy omelets? They have the best whiskers. |

Water Temps: 51 at White Shoal. 38 at the mid-lake buoy southwest of Gull Island. No other stations reporting. Those temps are cold enough to do you in pretty quickly if you wind up in the water with no way to get out. If you are out in a small craft, remember to dress for the water not the weather. |
