From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Monday, April 4th, 2022. |

Now, some news… COVID-19 data released by the state on Friday continues to show good trends. Current seven-day running averages are 831 for new cases and 17 for deaths—that’s statewide. There were 37 new cases in our region during the two days covered by the report and no deaths. Charlevoix had three new cases. Hospital utilization data looks good both statewide and locally. Starting this week, the state will be reporting COVID-19 data once a week on Wednesday. On the island, nothing new other than that the Health Center now has 2nd round Booster shots available for those 50 and older or immunocompromised. Give them a call at 2275 to set up an appointment. Mr. Richard’s class is back from their Washington D-C trip. They had some cool weather, but sunny days and got to see the famous cherry blossoms in almost full bloom. If you see any of the students around town, ask them about their trip. There’s a special exhibit coming the Print Shop Museum at the end of the week. The Black History 101 Mobile Museum will be there open from 3:00 to 5:00 on Friday and again on Saturday from 11:00 to 3:00. The exhibit features over 125 original documents and photographs signed by African American historical figures representing the fields of education, politics, science, arts, sports, music, film, religion, and civil rights. Friday evening at 7:00 exhibit curator Dr. Khalid el-Hakim will give a talk that shares through the lens of the black experience how factors, historical figures, and events shaped American history—and how the artifacts in the exhibit relate to that history. |

BIRTHDAYS: Jim Wojan is celebrating today. Word is he finally turned 29. Happy Birthday to Jim and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. But let’s be careful out there. |
ON THIS DAY in 1968 while visiting Memphis, Tennessee, to support striking workers, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is shot and killed as he stands on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. Months later, James Earl Ray will be charged with the murder. Also on this date in 1975, childhood friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen launch Microsoft. Other names they considered include ‘Outcorporated Inc.’ and ‘Allen & Gates.’ |
WORD OF THE DAY: salient (adjective) [SAIL-yunt] which means “standing out conspicuously,” “being prominent,” or “of notable significance.” Salient first popped up in English as a word referring to the act of leaping. It is from the Latin verb salire, which means “to leap.” Today, salient is usually used to describe things that “leap out,” such as the salient features of a painting or the salient points in an argument. |
Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Monday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” On a lighter note: How many software developers does it take to change a lightbulb? Zero. A lightbulb is a hardware problem. |

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, April 4th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
