Now, some news… On the COVID-19 data front, nothing new locally. Next update from the state comes tomorrow afternoon. The B-I-C-S robotics team B-I robot, which I coach, is busy getting ready for their next event. Team mentors have been making some tweaks to the robot while student team members were away IN D-C and on spring break. Steve Radionoff, who joined the team as a mentor this year, says the changes aren’t that big, but should address issues encountered at the first event. “We are adjusting the intake and making some changes to the climb system,” he said. “The student team will be back in the shop today to finish those up and working on some changes to the code that runs the robot. Team alum Kai Drost is helping with that from his perch up at Michigan Tech. The team’s next competition is this weekend at Kingsford in the U-P. More information including links to watch are on the team’s website at b-I robot dot org. There’s a special exhibit coming the Print Shop Museum at the end of the week. The Black History 101 Mobile Museum will be there open from 3:00 to 5:00 on Friday and again on Saturday from 11:00 to 3:00. The exhibit features over 125 original documents and photographs signed by African American historical figures representing the fields of education, politics, science, arts, sports, music, film, religion, and civil rights. Friday evening at 7:00 exhibit curator Dr. Khalid el-Hakim will give a talk that shares through the lens of the black experience how factors, historical figures, and events shaped American history—and how the artifacts in the exhibit relate to that history. |

BIRTHDAYS: Sophie McDonough, Sanomalynn Naranjo, Steve Glynn, Adelyn Grogan and April Burgess are all celebrating today. Happy Birthday to April, Sophie, Sanomalynn, Adelyn and Steve, and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. But let’s be careful out there. |
ON THIS DAY in 1772, which happened to be Easter Sunday, 3,000 miles from the nearest continental land, Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen finds a 63-square-mile island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. Towering stone statues on what will come to be known as Easter Island mystify these first European visitors and others for centuries to come. |
WORD OF THE DAY: adversity (noun) [ad-VER-suh-tee] which is “a state or instance of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune.” Adversity comes from Middle English adversite, meaning “opposition, hostility, misfortune, or hardship,” which itself is from Latin adversus, the source of adverse, which means “bad or unfavorable,” as in “adverse criticism” or “an adverse reaction to the medication.” |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Tuesday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Charles Darwin, who submitted the first chapters of his book Origin of the Species to the publisher on this date in 1859: “The world will not be inherited by the strongest, it will be inherited by those most able to change.” On a lighter note: Why didn’t T-Rex cross the road? He wasn’t a chicken yet. |

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Tuesday, April 5th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
