News Update

Community Calendar for Wednesday, February 9th, 2022

From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Wednesday, February 9th, 2022.

First some news …

Health Center has results back on the last its pending tests.  There were two outstanding and both are back negative. No new tests. No tests pending. No new positives. There are now six cases two weeks or less old tested positive on the island.

If you’ve been thinking this winter seems to be on the shy side for snow, you’re right. The U.S. Drought monitor has the island in a growing region of Michigan that it labels abnormally dry—along with a big swath of the U-P, the tip of the northeast lower peninsula and another big swath through mid-Michigan. Parts of the U-P is beyond that and into a moderate drought. That could lead to a hotter, dryer summer.  And, not as much spring lake level rise.  Indeed, word from the Army Corps is that none of the Great Lakes will break through record levels this season. The drought is spreading across the upper midwest.  There are some interesting maps in today’s script online.

Meantime, ice on the lakes is causing trouble this winter—not so much because there is an abnormal amount—there isn’t—but because breakdowns in icebreaking coast guard ships is delaying shipping. Industry sources say 750,000 tons of cargo has been stranded on the lakes this winter due to equipment issues—and a shortage of ice breakers.  That’s added to supply chain woes, they say, as well as flooding risk in the spring, and they are calling for action to get more ice breakers in the water.  Part of the $2 trillion federal Build Back Better Act, which passed in the U.S. House but stalled in the Senate, would allocate $350 million for a Great Lakes icebreaker like the Mackinaw. Plans are to build another ship similar to the Mackinac.

Looking for KN-95 masks. We have word this morning that the Health Department of Northwest Michigan has delivered some to the Health Center. And, the C-O-A has some left over from those it received for seniors that are now available for all. In both cases call in advance to arrange pickup.

We have an interesting documentary Film Series coming up here at the BIC Center. Rober Cole and Jackson Smith have planned it with fish and fishing as the theme—tied to the island’s historic connection to both.  The three films in the series will show up in the Hangout on Fridays at 6 starting next week. First up on the 18th—that’s next Friday—is  The Fish Baron, the story of a hole in the wall fish shop that’s become an iconic restaurant in Iceland.

Finally, a reminder that the BIC Center is operating with reduced opening times this week. Temporary hours will be nine to 1:00 Monday through Friday. No Time for Art or Games Galore this week.  And, no movies this weekend. Regular hours resume on Monday, February 15th.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for the week:

The Emergency Services Authority has a special meeting set for today at 2:00. Among the agenda items are Cody Randall’s resignation as E-M-S Director. The meeting is at Peaine Township Hall. B-I-C-S board Committee of the whole meets today, too, at 5:00 at school.  And the St. James Board meets for their regular monthly meeting this evening at 5:30. Elks club meets Thursday at 5:00 at the Peaine Township Hall.  Meeting details are in the calendar entries online.

Wednesday, Nothing but Needles is on for crafters at Peaine Township Hall.  That starts at 9:00. Also, it’s C-O-A’s Chair Yoga at 10:00.

Thursday, Tai-Chi is at 9:30 and Pickleball at 10 here at the BIC Center.  And you can play Euchre this evening over at the Whiskey Point Brewing Company.  Cards hit the table at 7:00.

Friday, Pickleball is on again—in the Theater at the BIC Center at 10:00. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30 and at noon it’s C-O-A’s winter BINGO game also here at the BIC Center.

Saturday, the Library and Historical Society continue a series of weekly workshops on using the Library Edition of Ancestry dot com.  Start time is 1:00 p.m. The workshops will continue on Saturdays through February.

As we noted at the top, the BIC Center will close at 1:00 on Saturday, so no movies this weekend. Regular showing resume next weekend with a pair of looks at the White House.  The 4:00 show is First Kid with Sinbad and at 7:00 it’s the American President with Michael Douglas and Annette Benning. Again, those are next weekend, not this weekend.

Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship.  Times and more details are in the calendar.

Next week, Tuesday, Tai Chi is on up in the Hangout at 9:30. Pickleball is on at 10:00 in the Theater. And the Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout.

BIRTHDAYS:  Linda McDonough, Joe Williams and B-I robot team member Kagan Ford are celebrating today.   Happy Birthday to Linda, Kagan and Joe, and, if we missed you on the list Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip.  Still, let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1950 Senator McCarthy claims US government full of communists. Brandishing a list of 205 “known communists” in the State Department, Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy warns of “enemies from within” during a speech that will propel him to infamy as the ringleader of America’s Red Scare in the post-WWII era. (Bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: yen (noun)[YEN], which means a strong desire, urge, or craving for something. Although yen suggests no more than a strong desire these days (as in “a yen for a beach vacation”), at one time someone with a yen was in deep trouble: the first meaning of yen was an intense craving for opium. The word comes from Cantonese yīn-yáhn, a combination of yīn, meaning “opium,” and yáhn, “craving.” In English, the Chinese syllables were translated as yen-yen. Of course, yen is also the main denomination of currency in Japan.  I looked for an etymological connection to today’s meaning of the same of the same word, but didn’t find one.

(Merriam-Webster)

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Wednesday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Winston Churchill: “The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.”

On a lighter note: Which baseball team always has a sense of déjà vu?  The New York Haven’t We Mets.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, February 9th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
