WVBI COVID-19 Update for February 8, 2022

Here’s your COVID-19 update. Nothing new from the Health Center. They have two tests pending. There are now six cases two weeks or less old tested positive on the island. The state’s data released yesterday showed more big drops. Part of that is due to the weekend reporting period, but still the trend continues to be down sharply for new cases. There were about 3,300 new cases a day over the three days covered by the report, down from 4,900. Deaths continue to drop as well. There were 13 a day down from 27. Seven-day running averages are now 5,501 a day for new cases and 82 for deaths including reclassifications.

Statewide hospital occupancy is now down to about 78% both overall and for I-C-U beds. That’s within a few points of normal for both. COVID-19 occupancy continues to drop. It’s now at 12.1% overall and 17.1% for the I-C-U. Those numbers are still high compared to where we were at the end of summer, but they are off dramatically from just a month ago. Locally, Munson in Charlevoix continues with no COVID-19 patients. McLaren in Petoskey is up one to 16 with two in their I-C-U.

Emmet County’s C-O-A has fully reopened their senior centers after a long COVID-19 shutdown of in person activities. Congregate meals and other in person activities and services are back at their centers in Petoskey and Brutus. Charlevoix County C-O-A leaders say they will stick with take-away dining until transmission rates drop out of the danger zone set by the C-D-C. They are concerned about maintaining staff to provide services—and they can’t do that if they catch COVID-19. So, this month’s C-O-A dinner will be a take-away affair again. But, you can register in advance for other C-O-A activities at the BIC Center—Tai-Chi, Chair Yoga and BINGO. Masks are required.

Looking for KN-95 masks. We have word this morning that the Health Department of Northwest Michigan has delivered some to the Health Center. And, the C-O-A has some left over from those it received for seniors that are now available for all. In both cases call in advance to arrange pickup.
