From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Monday, February 7th, 2022. |
|
First some news … Health Center is reporting three new tests. They also have three tests back as negative including two from prior dates. That leaves with two tests pending. No new positives. There are now six cases two weeks or less old tested positive on the island. Friday’s report from the state showed another drop in new cases, continuing what has been a fairly sharp drop overall in new cases. There were an average of 4,903 new vases a day over the two days covered by the report. That pushed the seven-day running average to 7,121, which is off by nearly 50% from just a week earlier. Deaths seem to be dropping as well, but not as dramatically and it isn’t a straight slope. There were about 27 new deaths a day during the reporting period along with 155 deaths from prior dates. Current seven-day average is 86 including reclassified deaths. In our eight-county region, there were 132 new cases a day and four deaths overall. 18 of the new cases were in Charlevoix County. The deaths were in Grand Traverse with two, and Kalkaska and Otsego with one each. Statewide hospital utilization data shows overall occupancy steady. It’s about five points higher than normal, but off from the highs we had been seeing. COVID-19 occupancy is off from the highs, too, but steady compared to the last report. No change at our local hospitals. Data summaries from the last report are available on the WVBI COVID-19 Info Page in our update for today. Over in Benzie County, a 57-year-old man is being held in the murder of 72-year-old Linda Henry during a house robbery. The murder happened Friday. The suspect, Jeffrey Stratton was tracked to a house next door and caught when he tried to escape. He’s being held without bond. The Health Center is in the market for two additions to its board. Information on applying is in today’s script online. Applications are due tomorrow. The nine member Board seeks to fill two at large positions. Board terms are three years and directors are not compensated. To apply, please send a letter which states your interest and provides the Selection Committee a little about yourself. Letters may be emailed to the attention of Ann Partridge: ann@biruralhealth.org (place “Board Application” in your “Subject” line) or mailed to Ms. Partridge c/o the Rural Health Center Board of Directors Selection Committee, PO Box 146, Beaver Island, MI 49782. Mailed application letters must be received by Tuesday February 8, 2022. Emailed applications must be received by midnight February 8, 2022. The Selection Committee will begin reviewing applications and scheduling interviews in February. Should you have any questions regarding the application process, please email ann@biruralhealth.org or phone: 231-448-2275 Still no word from the Health Department of Northwest Michigan about making some of the ten million KN-95 masks the state is distributing for free available on the island. So far, just forty packs with five masks each have been received through the C-O-A and they were earmarked for seniors. If any of those are left, they are available for all this week. We’ve asked the health department about availability here, but they have not responded. Two reminders for you. First, the Elks sponsored dental check-ups for B-I-C-S students are going on today and tomorrow over at the dental clinic at the health center. Check with the school office if you need details. Second, remember that the BIC Center is rolling back hours for the week. Temporary hours will be nine to 1:00 Monday through Friday. No Time for Art or Games Galore this week. And, no movies this weekend. Regular hours resume on Monday, February 15th. |

BIRTHDAYS: Laura Oliver is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Laura, and, if we missed you on the list Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |

TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. Still, let’s be careful out there. |

ON THIS DAY in 2020 Li Wenliang, a doctor in Wuhan, China, among the first to raise the alarm about a strange new virus, dies at 33 after contracting it. In early January, local police had reprimanded Li for making what officials called ‘making false comments.’ In coming months, he will be hailed outside China as a hero for his early warning of what will become a global pandemic. Perhaps the anniversary of his death will serve as a reminder of the danger of letting any government quash views that don’t follow the party line. Also on this date in 1935, the beloved board game Monopoly is introduced leading ultimately to the local classic Beaver Islandopoly. (Bing.com) |

WORD OF THE DAY: admonish (verb) [ad-MAH-nish], which means “to express warning or disapproval to (someone) especially in a gentle or earnest manner.” Admonish is believed to come from the Latin verb admonēre, meaning “to give a reminder or advice to” or “to caution.” The root monēre means “to warn.” (Merriam-Webster) |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Monday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from President Ronald Reagan, whose birthday was February 6: “We the people tell the government what to do; it doesn’t tell us.” On a lighter note: What does Star Wars musis sound like up in the mountains? Yoda-ling. |

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Monday, February 7th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day– and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
