WVBI COVID-19 Update for February 7, 2022

Health Center is reporting three new tests. They also have three tests back as negative including two from prior dates. That leaves with two tests pending. No new positives. There are now six cases two weeks or less old tested positive on the island.

Friday’s report from the state showed another drop in new cases, continuing what has been a fairly sharp drop overall in new cases. There were an average of 4,903 new vases a day over the two days covered by the report. That pushed the seven-day running average to 7,121, which is off by nearly 50% from just a week earlier. Deaths seem to be dropping as well, but not as dramatically and it isn’t a straight slope. There were about 27 new deaths a day during the reporting period along with 155 deaths from prior dates. Current seven-day average is 86 including reclassified deaths.

In our eight-county region, there were 132 new cases a day and four deaths overall. 18 of the new cases were in Charlevoix County. The deaths were in Grand Traverse with two, and Kalkaska and Otsego with one each. Statewide hospital utilization data shows overall occupancy steady. It’s about five points higher than normal, but off from the highs we had been seeing. COVID-19 occupancy is off from the highs, too, but steady compared to the last report. Still no word from the Health Department of Northwest Michigan about making some of the ten million KN-95 masks the state is distributing for free available on the island. So far, just forty packs with five masks each have been received through the C-O-A and they were earmarked for seniors. If any of those are left, they are available for all this week. We’ve asked the health department about availability here, but they have not responded.
