COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for September 9, 2020

Governor Whitmer yesterday signed a bill into law that should soon drop $300 a week into unemployed worker’s accounts with funding for the benefit coming from Federal funds.  The benefit is retroactive to August 1st. Unemployed folks are entitle to the extra payment if they are otherwise entitled to $100 or more in unemployment benefits from the state, which is a stricter requirement than what applied to the $600 a week in aid that expired at the end of July. The new benefit will expire at the end of this month unless extended. A battle rages in Washington about the length and amount of any further extension.

State health officials reported 448 new confirmed cases in their data yesterday.  There was one new death. That’s right, just one death statewide.  There are now 107,819 confirmed cases since the crisis began.  Of those 20,415 are active.  Death toll stands at 6,530. New case seven day running average is down is at 662.  Average for deaths is down two to six.  M-I Safe Start Map which is still based on data from last Saturday shows a state-wide positive test rate running average at 3.4%, which is just slipping into the low risk zone and the average new case per capita rate state-wide is at 47.0 per million, which is at the low end of the high risk zone.

Our region had just one new case in Grand Traverse County, but one case removed in Emmet—so no net change. No new deaths. Overall total of cases in our region is 934 of which 363 are less than 30 days old. There have been 32 deaths overall.  Rolling averages are 10 new cases a day and no deaths.  In the U-P there were five new cases and no new deaths. They now have 1,156 total cases with 496 active and 19 deaths. Averages are 21 new cases a day, no deaths.
