COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for September 1, 2020

As Beaver Island students get ready to head back to school a week from today, state officials are reporting eight new COVID outbreaks at Michigan schools and colleges.  But they won’t say where.  Apparently the state is still working on a way to report that information, though they have given no indication about what makes that so hard.

Meantime, the data the state has said are relevant to the decision to go back to school in person continue to look good for our region and there are no reports on the island that suggest a problem.

Safe Start data for our zone show the positive test rate at 2.2%, which is in the low risk zone.  The number of new cases per million is 28.8, which is medium high risk, but the number has been dropping quickly since August 23rd. Health Center report this morning shows nothing new. No more tests run to add to the total so far of 168.  Of those, 160 are back as negative, two pending and six positives—with five of those for folks who’ve left the island and the remaining one more than 30 days old.

State health officials reported 451 new confirmed cases yesterday.  There were 7 new deaths. There are now 102,468 confirmed cases since the crisis began.  Of those 20,112 are active.  Death toll stands at 6480. New case seven day running average is down to 687.  Average for deaths is up one to 12.  M-I Safe Start Map which is still based on data from last Friday shows a state-wide positive test rate running average at 3.1%, which is at the very bottom of the medium risk zone and the average new case per capita rate state-wide is at 44.1 per million, which is at the low end of the high risk zone.

Our region had 17 new cases in yesterday’s reports. Two in Antrim, one in Benzie, three each in Emmet and Grand Traverse and one in Leelanau. No new deaths. Overall total of cases in our region is 856 of which 331 are defined as active—that is less than 30 days old. There have been 28 deaths overall.  Rolling averages are 17 new cases a day and no deaths.  In the U-P there were 12 new cases and no new deaths in yesterday’s report. They now have 994 total cases with 456 active and 19 deaths. Averages are 12 new cases a day, no deaths.

Full county-by-county data for our region are in today’s script online along with state and region totals, plus rolling averages.

Data from 8/31/2020

Versiti, the folks who now run blood donations in northern Michigan, has announced that the will be running COVID-19 anti-body tests on all blood that they collect—and they’ll let donors know if the test is positive.  That means that if you donate blood you’ll also learn wether you have antibodies reflective of a prior COVID-19 infection.  If you do, you may also be eligible to donate COVID-19 convalescent plasma.  Learn more about the test here: https://wvbi.biccenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/COVID-19-Antibody-Test-Info.pdf.
