COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for October 8, 2020

As uncertainty continues about the fallout of the Michigan Supreme Court’s invalidation of the Governor’s COVID-19 orders, one area of consensus seems to be developing around unemployment benefits.  One of the now invalid orders extended the time for benefits by six weeks, made it easier to apply and expanded workshare programs.  Bridge Michigan reports that State Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey sees unemployment benefits as an area of common concern and the governor has specifically raised it. And there are signs of cooperation.  Tuesday the governor signed a bipartisan bill that allows clerks to begin processing absentee ballots the day before the election and requiring that clerks contact voters about signature mismatch issues on those ballots.

While disputes about what the rules will look like going forward go on, the C-D-C continues to advise that wearing face masks where family pod based social distancing can’t be maintained remains one of the most effective ways to stop spread of the virus.  And, there is a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services order in place that implements the same masking requirements that were in the governor’s orders. While some question the validity of that order, here on the island it looks like most people are following the C-D-C’s masking advice and health department requirements no matter what.  Businesses still display signs requiring masking and the vast majority of people appear to be donning masks when they should under the guidelines.

On the island, no new tests or results at the Health Center. In the region, 17 new cases in yesterday’s state report—and no new deaths. No new cases in Charlevoix County. 12 were in Grand Traverse.  314 active cases in the region. Rolling averages are 13 new cases a day and no deaths.  Zone 6 Safe Start data show the positive test flat at 2.1%, and the number of cases per million headed down at 22.3.

For the state, yesterday’s report had 1017 new cases and no new deaths.  There are 23,471 cases 30 or less days old, and 6,847 deaths. Averages are 879 for new cases and 14 for deaths. Safe Start numbers are 3.5% for the positive test rate, which is in the A risk zone and close to the C-D-C target. New case rate is 67.7 per million, which is in the upper third of the C level risk zone.
