COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for May 26, 2021

Yesterday’s state COVID-19 numbers had more good news.  The Monday reports cover two days and typically show a bit of a dip in numbers due to the weekend period they cover, but they were down even for that.  There were an average of just 689 new cases a day statewide for the period and seven deaths a day—again statewide. That brings the statewide seven day running averages to 1,104 new cases a day and 47 deaths.  In our eight-county region, there were an average of 10 new cases a day and no deaths.  Charlevoix county had one new case total. Averages are 17 new cases a day and no deaths.

Safe start dashboard has new case counts headed down state-wide, in our zone and in Charlevoix County. Positive test rates headed down, too. Current state rate is 6.5%. It’s 6.4% in the Traverse City zone.  And in Charlevoix County, we are at 4.8%. Active case counts are down again—by about 3,600 statewide, 118 in the T-V-C zone and 58 in our region. We should be below 1,000 active cases in our region in the next day or so.

Remember, if you aren’t vaccinated, you need to continue wearing a mask for now in public inside spaces. If you want to ditch your mask, but have missed the vaccination clinics –the Health Center has COVID-19 vaccinations available now on demand.  No need to wait for a clinic or go across.  You can get your shot right here on the island at your convenience.  Just call 2275 to set up your appointment.  And, remember that masks are still required on the ferry and planes—and at school.

The hospitalization utilization rates may have dipped for the weekend, but yesterday’s report shows them coming down—finally. Overall statewide utilization is at 76.6% and it’s 75.5% for the I-C-U—both of those numbers within the range of what the C-D-C says are normal.  And that comes with lowered COVID-19 utilization as well. 6.4% of beds statewide have COVID-19 patients. For the I-C-U, the rate is 12.7%.  In our region, overall utilization is still high at 80%.  It’s 76.3% for the I-C-U. Locally, Munson in Charlevoix continues with no COVID-19 patients. McLAren in Petoskey has five total, and they’ve moved one out of their I-C-U leaving just one patient there.

On the island, after four new tests and negatives in their Friday report—no updates yesterday, No new tests, no new positives and no tests pending.
