The island has its first positive test since December posted yesterday in the Health Center’s update. No details right no on the circumstances. There aren’t any other tests reported as pending right now, but lately there has been no delay in a new test being reported as run and the results.
If you live on the island, are 16 or older, haven’t had the COVID-19 vaccine yet and haven’t completed the reregistration process with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan, you need to get that done. There’s a link to the survey in today’s script online and on the W-V-B-I COVID-19 info page. Find it all at W-V-B-I dot net.

Statewide, there was another huge batch of new COVID-19 cases in yesterdays health department data—5,224 new cases the most in a single day since December 10th. The state also reported 19 new deaths and 30 reclassified deaths. Seven day running averages are now 3,493 for new cases and 21 for deaths.
In the eight-county region we’ve been following now for more than a year there were 90 new cases, and no new deaths. Two of the new cases were in Charlevoix.
Active case counts continue to go up. There are now 60,150 statewide, up by almost 4,000, and 1,317 in our region, up by 60. Positivity rate statewide is up one point five to 10.2%. For our Safe Start Zone is down four tenths to 8.6%. For Charlevoix County it’s steady at 5.1%. New case per million rates shown on the safe start dashboard are showing headed up statewide, flat in our safe start zone, and down in Charlevoix.
The latest hospital occupancy data from the state continue to show over all utilization at typical rates, but COVID-19 occupancy is continuing to increase—for regular beds its now at 7.8% and for I-C-U beds its 12%. We’re seeing additional hospitalizations locally, too. McLaren in Petoskey now has 11 patients—all in I-C-U beds. That’s up by three since last week. After a long stretch with no COVID-19 patients, Munson in Charlevoix had one in a regular bed. But, they are back down to no patients.
Complete data for our region plus summaries for the state, the T-C safe start zone and the U-P are in today’s script online.
