Yesterday’s state COVID-19 data from the state includes another stiff batch of new cases—there were 3,576. That’s pushed the running average to 2,938, the highest it’s been since January when we were recovering from the last spike in cases. There were eight new deaths in the report along side eight reclassified deaths. Meantime, the average positivity rate for tests has pushed up to 8.1%–driven there by the highest single day rate we’ve seen since early December. It was 12%. Still, while the new case rates are spiking, there has not so far been a jump in the number of deaths. Back in December, we were experiencing an average number of deaths a day or well over 100. And, it bears noting that the number of daily tests is down by almost 25% since back in December. Even with the positivity spike, the number of cases per million, which had been ramping up looks like it is starting to drop.
As cases surge, it appears that several school districts—mostly downstate—that had just gone back to in person learning are retreating to remote classes. That’s the report from Bridge Michigan this morning. But, state officials say that they are not looking at another statewide shutdown of schools.
In our region, there were 75 new cases with four in Charlevoix County. There were no new deaths. Seven day rolling averages in the region are 58 for new cases and 0 for deaths. Positivity rate for our Safe Start Zone is 9%. For Charlevoix County its 4.8%.
Statewide there are now 53,272 active cases, up almost 3,000. Our region has 1,187, which is up by 58.
New case per million rates shown on the safe start dashboard are showing headed up statewide, flat in our safe start zone, and down in Charlevoix. But, if you look at the averages, they are all headed down.
Hospital occupancy data wasn’t updated yesterday, but the last update—while showing a bit of an uptick in COVID-19 cases—still showed good overall capacity and no big surge in hospitalizations.
On the island, no new tests run. No results pending. Last positive test was December 7th.

Data from March 23, 2021
The Health Department of Northwest Michigan is asking all island residents 16 and older who haven’t been vaccinated to complete an on-line pre-registration survey. It’s to help the department plan their next COVID-19 vaccination clinic on the island, which will be in early April. There’s a link to the survey in today’s script online and on the W-V-B-I COVID-19 info page. Find it all at W-V-B-I dot net.
