COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for March 18, 2021

Yesterday’s data from the state shows more than 3,000 new cases—quite a jump—but no new deaths. Still, state health officials are concerned about the surge in cases with the daily average of those doubling in the past three weeks to more than 2,000 a day.  Overall statewide, COVID hospitalization rates are starting to move up—mostly in I-C-U beds with the rate moving from about 7 to 8 and half percent.  Deaths have continued to decrease, but some warn they are a trailing indicator and could start to go up.  But, case and death rates are still going down overall for seniors—probably the result of vaccinations.

Still, Michigan is the one of just two states in the upper Midwest seeing an uptick in cases.  The other is Minnesota.  What’s causing the surge? Experts say it is the variants of the virus that are more transmissible.  COVID fatigue and relaxed restrictions are also a factor they say—although they offered no explanation for varying experiences in states with fewer restrictions.

Here are the numbers in yesterday’s report: 3,164 new cases and no deaths. Seven day rolling averages are 2,073 for new cases—that’s up again—and 15 for deaths with reclassifications included—which is down again. Charlevoix had three new cases. Seven day running averages for the region are 48 new cases a day and no deaths.

Statewide there are now 30,303 active cases, up about 1,900. Our region has 924, which is up by 48.

Statewide test positivity rate is up four tenths to 5.9%.  It’s steady at 6.6% in our safe start zone. In Charlevoix we are up eight tenths to 5.2%. C-D-C target is 3% or less.  New case per million rates shown on the safe start dashboard are showing as up statewide and in Charlevoix. Our Safe Start Zone is showing flat.

Over all hospital occupancy data looks good across the board with those rates at or near normal levels of 75%. For COVID-19 patients, the statewide percentage of regular beds occupied is about where it has been for some time at 4.6%.  It’s up a bit for I-C-U bed occupancy at 8.6%.  Locally, No COVID-19 patients at Munson in Charlevoix and three at McLaren in Petoskey.

On the island, no new tests run.  No results pending. Last positive test was December 7th.

Data from March 15, 2021

Please remember: The Health Department of Northwest Michigan is asking all island residents 16 and older who haven’t been vaccinated to complete an on-line pre-registration survey.  It’s to help the department plan their next COVID-19 vaccination clinic on the island, which will be in early April.  There’s a link to the survey in today’s script online and on the W-V-B-I COVID-19 info page.  Find it all at W-V-B-I dot net. Don’t delay. Take the survey today.
