COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for June 4, 2021

Governor Whitmer spoke to business groups in Grand Rapids yesterday in an effort to get the legislature to act on 18 billion in federal COVID funding that’s now stuck in a stalemate between them and the governor. She outlined various spending proposals including a grant program to boost wages to a minimum of $15 hour. Apparently, the idea is to make wages the equivalent of what’s now available from unemployment benefits, though it isn’t clear from the proposal why it is believed folks would come to work for the same amount they can get at home. Other proposed spending would go to restaurants and other place-based businesses to cover operating expenses.  Another bucket of spending would be for business accelerator programs.

Daily state COVID reports for Thursday had more good news. They show 510 new cases and no net new deaths across the state. There were 62 reclassified deaths in the report and apparently some deaths taken off the rolls. That brings the seven day running averages to 485 new cases and 34 deaths a day (including the reclassifications). In our eight-county region there were 14 new cases and one death. Charlevoix County had two new cases. The death was in Emmet. Averages for our region are now 10 new cases a day and one death.

On the island, no new tests, no new positives and no tests pending. Last positive was May 14th.

Safe start dashboard has new case counts headed down state-wide, in our zone and in Charlevoix County. Positive test rates headed down, too. Current state rate is 3.9%. It’s 3.8% in the Traverse City zone.  And in Charlevoix County, we are at 2.5%, below the C-D-C’s 3% target. Active case counts are down—by about  4,500 statewide, 136 in the T-V-C zone, and down 59 in our region, where we have 648 active cases.

Hospitalization utilization rates have ticked up a bit after the holiday weekend, but the COVID-19 share of patients looks steady. Munson in Charlevoix continues with no COVID-19 patients. McLaren in Petoskey has six. That includes 3 patients in their I-C-U.

Remember, if you aren’t vaccinated, you need to continue wearing a mask for now while inside at public spaces. You can ditch the mask once you are fully vaccinated—and lucky for you the Health Center has COVID-19 vaccinations available. Just call 2275 to set up your appointment.  And, remember that masks are still required on the ferry and planes—and at school.

Complete data for our region plus summaries for the state, the T-C safe start zone and the U-P are in today’s script online.
