The Health Center is reporting a bundle of new COVID-19 tests this afternoon, with 12 run and nine back as positive. That ends a run since December 15th with no new positives on the island. A number of those who tested positive are reported to have traveled off the island during the holidays. Also this afternoon, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan issued a press release stating that they have not yet been notified of tests results showing the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus in Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet or Otsego counties. It states that mitigation strategies and response plans are the same for all variants. The full text of the release is available here: https://wvbi.biccenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/1.6.2022-COVID-Update.pdf Data from the state released yesterday afternoon covered two days and showed a continued surge in new cases and but a slight decline in deaths. The new data push the seven-day running averages to 12,654 for new cases (up by just over 200) and to 82 for deaths (down by nine) (including reclassifications). In our region there were 297 new cases over the five-day period and six deaths. 39 of the new cases were in Charlevoix. The deaths were in Benzie and Grand Traverse with two deaths each and Leelanau and Otsego with one death each. Hospitalization rates continue to run high with 84.0% of regular beds occupied state-wide and 83.8% of ICU beds filled—those rates both up. COVID-19 occupancy numbers are high but fairly steady from the least report at 18.85 for all beds and 26.1% for ICU beds. Here are our updated data charts (data released 1/5):
