WVBI COVID-19 Update for January 27, 2022

No new case or test reports from the Health Center this morning. No tests pending. Island case count stands at 30.

Data from the state showed a new case average over the two days pretty much even with their last report with 13,712 cases. But there was a jump up in deaths even after backing out fatalities reclassified from prior dates, the rate jumped from 12 to 55 a day. In our region—the eight counties we’ve followed from the start—there were 494 new cases and two deaths. 24 of the new cases were in Charlevoix. Both deaths were in Grand Traverse. Hospital occupancy continues to run high overall and very high for COVID-19. No changes at our local hospitals. Michiganders seem overwhelmingly ready to move on from COVID-19 and get back to normal. That according to a report this morning from Bridge Michigan. They say that although there has been a drop in economic activity in the wake of the current omicron surge, it is nowhere near what happened during prior surges. Highway traffic is up and crowds have returned to sports events, concerts, gyms, bowling alleys and work according to the Bridge report. Here on the island, businesses report some fall off in recent weeks, but observe that it is probably as much due to the time of year as anything else. Fall and early winter on the island were busier than has been seen in years. More masks are seen than had been the case in the fall-and they continue to be required at school due to health department orders—but for the most part islanders seem to have weighed the risks and decided to carry on. But, our local health department continues to advise wearing masks when around others, especially inside at public spaces while calling for vaccines and boosters for all who are eligible.
